you would be better off with a conventional compound bow . i've had a few crossbows and was lucky to get 5 shots before the string snapped. catapaults with good ammo would be a worthwhile investment,
knives i would think you need at least two a large gollcok/machete type knife for shelter building, wood gathering,butchery etc and a small sharp knife for intricate work,skinning,trapping etc .
spend as much as you can afford on the small knife as u need a high quality blade. dont go for stainless as its no good at holding an edge. and dont go for a knife that looks like it came from the set of mad max . ray mears site has some good knives and info on it.
