BAGHDAD – A gym, barber shop and planters of plastic flowers: Welcome to the gentler face of the infamous Abu Ghraib prison.

The lockup where U.S. military guards tortured and humiliated Iraqi prisoners west of Baghdad has reopened with fresh paint and a new name in a bid to shed its notorious reputation.

Mohammed al-Zeidi, the assistant director of the Iraqi Rehabilitation Department, insisted the new prison would be operated in accordance with international standards.

To me Abu Ghraib respresent one of the many moral low points of the US involvement in Iraq. Not quite sure we lost our moral soul here thants to Rummy et al. but Im sure its one fo the focal points. We simply changed ownership and continued with the tactics Saddam used :shk:

I fail to understand why they would keep it open at all given its connection to both periods of brutality and human rights violations. Far better to start fresh and turn the site into something far more productive.
