No, they can't, their shortfall is higher than a line of credit can cover. So if they appropriated this money they'd only have it for a short while until they were back to square one. Just like California.

Actually worse than square one. That 225 million is taking from something else. I will be back on in an hour or so. I've got to get down and buy a few more things.

You see the problem here? They have to gather themselves up first, and if there's nothing to gather, then what do you do?

Thank you for suggesting some flags on this thread.

This hit home as I attended the Univ. of Kansas and taught for a few years on the Kansas side before leaving for Missouri.

The writing was on the wall and since Sept. '08, many school districts and departments learned firsthand just how bad the economic shape of KS truly is.

Things are going to very bad there soon, as they are already $250 million in the hole for 2009 alone.

Thank you again for everybody contributing to the survival of this thread!

I am going down to buy a new flag and hang it in Distress.
I was going to wait until Tues. for the crap bill, but this will work!

It will be interesting to find out how people will react around here.
Mostly they are clue less and don't keep up with this.

The future implication of KS is basically two results:
1. Significant increase in taxes (which the Repubs have been against for years)

2. Significant slashing of state services (social agencies, pensions, health care, transportation, education, mental health depts. etc.)

Kansas is a geographically large state, but not very populated. All departments and agencies have already been told to immediately slash their budgets by 10-15%.

Any future slashings will be felt by Kansans no doubt.

Bankruptcy is definitely in the books for alot of states. The Federal Government is going there in stride and will likely be bankrupt by the end of this year, beginning of 2010. Maybe sooner, depends on what happens in the near future.

Somehow, I expected more out our states in the middle.

I guess they are just like the Feds!
I am ready to go!
I have had enough!

I still wonder...what happens if/when a state goes "bankrupt."

Does the federal government just subsidize them from that point forward? Is there an overhault of state services?

What exactly can happen when a state goes bankrupt?

All I can say is organize. Call friends and family.

The only way the people will be paid attention to is by creating a movement so strong that political BS will bend to our will.
