The original intent of Mothers Day was to honor the mothers of the past. People were supposed to think about their mothers who had passed away, and possibly spend a picnic at the cemetery (it was quite common in those days to picnic at cemeteries as parks were still quite rare). The woman who thought of the concept of Mothers Day hated the idea of gifts and cards. She wanted to rescind the idea after Hallmark and others got into the game.

Hallmark eventually took over every other "holiday" and even invented a few to sell more cards (fathers day, grandparents day, etc). Coming soon: Love Day.
