GM offers buyouts to all 62,000 hourly workers

GM spokesman Tom Wilkinson said the offer "is available to all 62,000 hourly employees" covered by the United Auto Workers (UAW) union.

Well it looks like the Union Workers are being offered the soft way out before the hard way becomes inevitable. It makes you wonder who is going to get the better deal.

I have heard some real horror stories about some of the union workers, but I have to say it does bode ill with a lay off of that size.

At least they are haveing the luxury of the option, to take early retirement or a decent redundency.

Most those who have lost their jobs in the credit crisis, had no such luxury!

Also looks like GM are getting rid the older, more lucrative paid workers, then plan to recruit lower paying workers in future (most likely, they would offer most the current workers they are laying off these jobs, that way they save on wages and training costs). It also makes perfect business sense, to get rid of the over paid union guys, in favour of minimum wage non-union workers in future.

No doubt think how much money they could save if they closed
several plants here and opened up plants in Russia and India.

Oh wait, they already did that...LOL
