U.N. Surprised at Female Role in "Modern Slavery"

UNITED NATIONS (Map, News) - Surprisingly, the perpetrators behind human trafficking around the world are often women, the U.N. reported Thursday.

Women are the majority of traffickers in almost a third of the 155 nations the U.N. surveyed. They accounted for more than 60 percent of the human trafficking convictions in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.

For many, human trafficking is a world they had been pulled into themselves.

"Women commit crimes against women, and in many cases the victims become the perpetrators," Antonio Maria Costa, director of the Vienna-based U.N. Office on Drugs and Crime, said in an interview. "They become the matrons of the business and they make money. It's like a drug addiction."

It seems outrageous to think that women, who have struggled so hard against all kinds of exploitation and discrimination for centuries, would be responsible for some of the modern world's worst cases of human trafficking. But it's a peculiar trait of human beings that victims often become victimizers when the tables are turned.

I have seen and read about cases of modern slavery. One involved a young woman from South America who was sent by her parents to work as a domestic in the home of a European couple. The couple demanded a great deal of work from the young girl and refused to pay her. She couldn't return to her parents because they were too poor to support her, so she just remained as a slave for years, until she finally got up the courage to go to the authorities in Europe. It is sometimes hard to understand why people who are abused or victimized stay, or even choose to stay, in abusive conditions, but many times they are blinded to their other options in life and believe they have no choice.

Women are perfect for this job, because of the very fact nobody suspects women. You have plenty of women child abusers/ pedophiles, but nobody gives a crap, it's that sort of mentality.

Someone who normalizes dehumanization of themselves, and accepts that the ladder to better treatment is to be able to do dehumanizing things to others.

Plus, there are women and girls who are narcisstic and sociopathic just like there are men who are so. It just isn't as obvious usually.

I am not surprised. How many of the most evil child prostituation slave bordellos are run by a woman? Many. How many children lured away for sexual abuse are lured by a woman? More than you would think. How many children being abused by a male in the family unit have mothers who are intentionally ignoring or even complicit in it? MANY.

Just because someone's gender includes a vagina doesn't mean they cannot be a sociopath.

Logically, if that same person was treated in a way that was dehumanizing from very early on (more likely with females where many cultures see females as property and often disposable property as a cultural norm) this consistent treatment might be MORE likely to cause women as a whole to show sociopathic traits.

I'm pleased to this report.
It shows that in these more enlightened times that equal opportunity employment is now accepted in what was once (allegedly) a strictly male dominated career.

Bravo for political correctness and a pat on the back to those women who have made it in their chosen career.

Yes, in most western cultures--not just the middle east--women have historically been used as objects of exchange among males. For example, one family of males would trade a female to another family in exchange for land or money or power or some other object or advantage until relatively recently in western history. Rights of inheritance are passed down through the patriarchal line. Even now we speak of a father "giving away" a daughter in marriage. (Notable exceptions include a few native American tribes, which are matriarchal).

It is little wonder that women still behave, and treat themselves, as objects. Those who escape becoming objects themselves then objectify others. Maybe the real surprise is that there are any women at all who are entirely free of this.
