President Barack Obama called on Americans Thursday to follow Abraham Lincoln's example of showing generosity to political opponents and valuing national unity — above all else.

Hmm, what is going on here, and is there another motive behind all of this Lincoln stuff that Obama has seemed so obsessed with? I am confused... Some people were suspecting that the hints about Lincoln that Obama has been dropping, were about us having a civil war here, in this era... Now he is refering to Lincoln Post-civil-war...

Should WE return to work on our "farms and shops" ?

Most Americans do not care for growing their own food, and would go insane if they no longer could buy prepared TV dinners at the store. And for most, there are not too many shops to work at. What is Obama REALLY hinting at now??

"

Lincoln "could have sought revenge," Obama said, but he insisted that no Confederate troops be punished. "All Lincoln wanted was for Confederate troops to go back home and return to work on their farms and in their shops," Obama said. "That was the only way, Lincoln knew, to repair the rifts that had torn this country apart. It was the only way to begin the healing that our nation so desperately needed."

Obama said, "we are far less divided than in Lincoln's day," but "we are once again debating the critical issues of our time."

I wonder what Obama thinks are the critical issues of our time? And what does he need to accomplish, that has anything to do with Lincoln?
Civil War?

He is comparing Lincoln's era, because they fought over state rights.... And I think he is hinting that this is coming again.

There have been many threads on some states wanting to have rights back. BUT, will there be a civil war again over it? I would have all the respect in the world for him, if that is what he is about.

That's just Obama's way of giving us a warning.
This Lincoln quote pretty much sums it up, so brace yourself.

Can everybody say "Thank you B"?

“I see in the near future a crisis.... Corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed.” —Abraham Lincoln, Nov. 1864

Didn't Lincoln suspend habeus corpus? Also didn't he throw his critics in jail and escort them out of the country? No, thanks Obama, I don't think so, that kind of leadership that murders hundreds of thousands of people should not be tolerated, but studied and questioned.

He is being vague again and not being specific. Again we have to guess at what he means. Change...what does that mean. It is whatever the listener wants it to mean. Same as this speech....vague.

Hello my fellow Americans, I am the ghost of Abraham Lincoln; I have come to tell you all that I am rolling in my grave right now because this "Barak Obama" fellow wishes to emulate me and quote me.

Perhaps he should read some of my writings before he decides that I'm a guy he wants to emulate. Here's a quote from a speech I gave in the Fourth Debate with Stephen A. Douglas at Charleston, Illinois, September 18, 1858:

"I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races - that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race. I say upon this occasion I do not perceive that because the white man is to have the superior position the negro should be denied everything."

I find it appalling and disturbing that a man - a type of man - that I have believed should never live in a free society with my fellow white Americans, now not only has a position of power, but is president of the United States of America. What's even more appalling is how he makes me out to be his hero, when in reality I would have wanted nothing to do with the man. How could this have happened?

Mr President, welcome to ATS.
Nice to see you doing the internet thing. I'm sure John McCain is pretty jealous right about now.You know you really shouldn't be expressing yourself like that because some of the mods might think you're spewing hate. Wouldn't want them whacking you, er sorry, I mean, penalizing you.

Did you know Obama borrowed your Bible for his Inauguration. Yeah, there were millions of people that witnessed that event but for some reason it didn't count, so he had to do it again the next day. This time nobody was watching so he decided to ditch your Bible.
I sure hope he was able to return it to you because we can't afford to buy you a new one.

BTW, what do you think about Hispanics?

Well, Obama draws these parallels because Lincoln suspended the constitution, jailed his political opponents, and had some dissidents executed. This is just another fascist tactic, used by Hitler, Mussolini, Most American presidents in moder times, and now Obama. It's just a precursor to National Socialism...Which we all know is not socialism at all, it's fascism.

Obama started to build what he wants his presidential 'legacy' to be right from the start. He decided to hitch himself to Lincolns coat tails .. but the fact is that Obama is a Jimmy Carter - not an Abraham Lincoln.

I was saying just that to my girl friend today. This is going to be Carter 2 With a Vengeance. In theatres now, won't be leaving theatres for four years! And will likely leave us swimming in a sea of inflation.

Yup.
The only thing that could've been worse than Bush's third term is Carter's second.
Another push over prez has just arrived.

Creepy for sure.
If the Presidents aren't dead and ghostly, they're alive and ghastly.

The only thing that gets me about this. Did president Obama forget that deep down inside Lincoln was really a racist and only did what he did regarding raced for his own personal and political reasons? I'd love for someone interviewing him finally ask him what he thinks about that.
