Indonesia hit by powerful earthquake

JAKARTA, Indonesia – A powerful earthquake struck off eastern Indonesia early Thursday, briefly triggering fears of a tsunami. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 7.0-magnitude quake struck at 1:34 a.m. (1734 Wednesday GMT, 2:34 p.m. Wednesday EST) about 195 miles (315 kilometers) from Manado, the northernmost city on Sulawesi island.

It was centered 21 miles (35 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor, the agency said.

Five aftershocks measuring more than magnitude 5 followed, the USGS said on its Web site.

The Indonesian Agency for Meteorology and Geophysics said in mobile phone text messages sent to reporters that the quake had the power to trigger a tsunami, but the warning was lifted about an hour later

Wow, these poor people just can't catch a break from natural disasters. I've noticed an increase in geological events like earthquakes, and volcanic activity. There's also been alot of weird weather in many places across the globe. Not quite sure what to make of all of this. It seems our planet is experiencing a period of elevated activity...But from what? What is causing such usurpations in the relative calm that is a typical day on Planet Earth?

My thoughts are with the people of Indonesia.

They just had a 6.3 about 10 mins ago too, seems there's no let up for them. Hope it ends soon.

The earthquake seemed to have slowed down in the last week, was it "The calm before the Storm"?

There was just another about a half an hour ago in the same place.

This one measured 6.3 as of now. It may change as the magnitude is verified.

The Indonesian government also issued a tsunami warning from the first quake earlier today.

let's hope that every one is ok and no tsunami's are generated.

Oh I've only just finished listening to Jeffry Wands' 2009 predictions on C2C (coast.gmms.ca... ........... first listing 'Hour One'), in which he speaks of more of this to come for Indonesia in 2009.

Poor people - haven't they been through enough?

as for those predicting quakes there ... pff ... that's like predicting sunshine in CA.

You see why this is striking me as rather strange? This is a flurry of relatively powerful earthquakes all not far from each other at all. It's like what was happening in here in Reno for a while. We suffered something to the order of 600 earthquakes in a for about a week a few months ago...It was one of the more nervous weeks of my life.

I woke up this morning and first thing thats happens is the firefox starts shaking again, is there no rest for Indonesia.
