ANY member of a legislative house can bring up a resolution for any number of things.

Texas (for instance) once passed a resolution announcing 2/28/97 as "Taiwan Peace Day." I don't believe it made much of an impact in the news and it certainly hasn't made waves since then:

Resolutions also recognize/honor college and university events:

...and so on and so forth. Every state legislature passes dozens of these each day and the newspapers could fill up their columns just reprinting the texts with no commentary. I've seen resolutions honoring the scouts, honoring veterans, honoring newsmakers, honoring town centennials and so forth.

Resolutions are designed to make the people of the Congresscritter's district (and some others) feel Really Good about their Congresscritter... so that they will vote the dear Congresscritter back into office. Since these are basically "we affirm states rights" resolutions, they're really sort of a "non issue" (like saying "we affirm that the state government works.")

Here's the one that says "the US government allows each state two representatives and the Texas government is delighted to have two representatives in the US congress.: tarlton.law.utexas.edu...

So if you're expecting grand and sweeping changes from this, you're looking at the wrong direction. It's a "feel good" paper. It isn't a states revolt.

Look up resolutions brought by your own state representatives to see just how vapid many of them are and see how little of an impact resolutions have on the overall government.

Like I said if things collapse these congress people will try to hang their hats on what they did say or try to do in the past.

i think the key is that these resolutions are NON-Binding they are just talk because they realize that when thousands of pissed of people call and complain ever more upset with there politico's that they better start ACTING like they care...........before the pitch fork are dusted off

Not only are they "non-binding", but pointless. All U.S. States are sovereign, we don't need resolutions to point this out. When the first state officially secedes, then come and find me. Until then this is all smoke and mirrors.

First there is a matter of the pieces. A sublime conversion, Republicans Nationalizing everything, means the Republic is all but dead, converted to Nationalists instead, with a hierarchy resting at the Pinnacle of God's Laws.
Then there are the Democrats, pushing Socialist agenda's, effectively rendering Democracy dead, converted to Socialists instead, with a hierarchy resting at the Pinnacle of Man's Laws.
So, the Republican Democracy of Church and State has the Illusion of playing on, when in truth it is National Socialism singing America's Song.

I should have been anyway, but its not really tought in school in Australia, so I have never really questioned what may be in it.
Untill now.

It seems in Australia when we became a federation of states, the individual states gave up all their power to the federal government.

It proclaims in Australias constitution that no state can raise its own military or naval force.

Hence why we have never and never will have a civil war.

CuriousSkeptic - Woo Washington State! I have lived in several different states and another country and there is no place I would rather live. I would guess that our beliefs are different - you being a self described "hippie tree hugging pussy" and me being what I assume you would call a "right-wing conservative nut job", but in Washington we can get together for beers, argue, and just agree to disagree. Right or left, we are way laid back.

Back to topic, I would like to point out that, in Washington State anyway, we are probably one of the most left leaning socialist states in the USA (I still love it here though!). The resolution , House Joint Memorial 4009, was drafted by 7 representatives who are all Republicans. While I most certainly agree with them, in my opinion this is just the typical day to day politics as usual. The Republicans are making a show of taking a stand against the Democratic majority. Nothing more, nothing less. Without looking at the other states' resolutions, I would assume that they are pretty much the same thing.

Arizona State Legislature for formulating a bill that declares their state sovereignty. That same bill further details their right during martial law to call back servicemen to protect the state:

"…if the President or any other federal entity attempts to institute martial law or its equivalent without an official declaration in one or more of the states without the consent of that state … individual members of the military return to their respective states and report to the Governor until a new President is elected…"

Dependence on the federal government must be curtailed in any area. It weakens the states ability to be a check and balance against an overstepping Fed.

A great idea would be to slowly cut fed taxes and transfer the burden to the state and its taxpayers. This would allow states to debate tax and spending issues and issues the fed try's to control, at the view of a local level.

This would have good effect in so many areas for the individual states. Man anytime big sugar can get things done that it wants with a check carrot, that just has to undermine everything. Rots the teeth out of a strong republic.

Well it certainly a symbolic gesture but its a start. Maybe its simply a move to give us radicals hope. lol

When the issues of distribution money from a general fund to states was discussed at the founding, it was really limited to some basic things issues like interstate highways and the like. What we have today is a mess. Pigs on the wing.

We're not talking about the bailouts really right now, but how much power the Federal Government now tries to use to control things in individual states that they were NEVER given the power to use/enforce!

Byrd, normaly I would agree with you, but you have to admit there are a lot of states that either have this type of resolution or are working on one right now. Its not like many I've have seen that only have one or two reps behind it? There are long lists of reps backing each one of them up. From what I have read so far, they all are going through around the same time this summer. Granted, this isnt my bag, but when was the last time half the states put up resolutions asking the current govt. to step down?

Volunteer army with army core of eng. truckers unions, govt . employees,boy scouts, habitat for humanity etc. all beging installing solar panels and small windmills on farms ,city buildings and homes. The extra elec goes tocharge elec cars heat nuclear and coal plants. New gethermal plants get power from solar air in day time and power outrat night. Also huge ground battteries and capacitors set up.Either by carbon type or deep cycle and also huge tanks of compressed air night chargers releasing power at night along the system. A start to reconciling the 10th amendment and a paradyme shift to the life above our present circumtances but we must have agreement this elec company owned by all people and newborns.
