The cause for sainthood for British nun Mother Ricarda has been put forward to the Vatican. She helped save Italian Jews during WWII. In fact, it was said that she was a central figure in the hiding of refugees, including Italian Jews, communists and Poles. Her cause is in the first step toward beatification. No doubt she'll receive the title 'servant of God'. Later, if miracles are found to be involved, she'll be called 'blessed' and then 'saint'.

I thought the Brits, and everyone else, would like to see the wonderful work this brave woman did. She, and the nuns who were in her convent, took great personal risks against a great evil.

Mother Ricarda Beauchamp Hambrough played a vital role in saving the lives of more than 60 Jews by smuggling them into her convent. ...

During the second world war, on hearing that the Germans were exterminating Jews, Pope Pius XII secretly ordered the religious houses of Rome to shelter them from persecution, according to Vatican records.

Hmmm...these secret orders might account for the reason the Pope kept a neutral tone. I've always wondered what was behind him not taking a firmer stance against the Reich. Keeping yourself viewed as neutral; would have led to less suspicion, so makes sense...but who knows.
