Mirage Gold was an counter nuclear-terrorism exercise called by the FBI's domestic nuclear emergency unit in 1994, also involving the US Department of Energy's NEST (Nuclear Emergency Search Team). Severe interdepartmental communications and cooperation issues (like only the FBI participants in the exercise getting Q-level clearance while the NEST guys got 'redbadged' - essentially denied access to the areas they needed to be to do their jobs) contributed to the almost total failure of the participants to accomplish any of the tasks required in the exercise parameters to avoid the detonation of the fictional nuclear weapon.

Located where it was (in an aircraft hangar just outside Alvin Callender Field in Belle Chasse, LA, any significant nuclear explosive yield from the weapon would have destroyed the 4th Marine Air Wing (based at Callender) as well as many of the transport aircraft used by the Navy's Support Activity at New Orleans. A yield in the 10-20 kiloton range would have destroyed the second largest seaport in the nation, as well as inflicting severe casualties and property damage on the residents of Belle Chasse, New Orleans East (the city's heavily populated suburb which extends between old New Orleans and Belle Chasse) and probably most of the French Quarter and surrounding neighborhoods in New Orleans proper. Immediate, detonation related deaths could have ranged into the hundreds of thousands.

Does anyone know where I can lay hands on the after action reports from NEST and FBI on Mirage Gold.
