"There will be no lines at the DMV today.

The agency's 200 offices across California are closed, along with several other state agencies, as hundreds of thousands of state workers take their first day of unpaid leave to help the cash-starved government cut expenses.

Twice-monthly furloughs are the latest turn as the state's economic situation spirals out of control. Construction projects around California stopped last month, the state controller postponed tax refunds earlier this week and California will run out of cash in the next few weeks unless the Legislature and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger agree on a plan to fix the state's $42 billion deficit...."

But elected officials are exempt from layoffs:

The tow yards are gonna absolutely love this! Three extra days of impound fees, and 2 are at weekend rates!!! What a bonanza to be shared with the state and counties, not that this has anything to do with it of course.

Where the hell's my pitchfork? It's around here somewhere......
