Retreats: Democrats, GOP resort to rest

The House's Democrats have left town for an annual retreat at the Kingsmill Resort and Spa in Williamsburg, Va., and this afternoon President Barack Obama will make his debut on Air Force One as president with a quick hop to Williamsburg to see them.

Melanie Sloan, executive director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington: "Having a retreat can be a reasonable good thing, and members aren't going to stay at the Motel 6. Nevertheless, under these economic circumstances, they shouldn't be at overly expensive resorts ... It's more than a little disingenuous to holler about AIG's lavish retreat when members...- then hold lavish retreats of their own.'' Retreats have their defenders, too. "I believe in them," says Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.), who as chairman of the House Republican Conference helped organized this year's sessions. His case: They leave members of Congress "better informed, better acquainted and inspired to do the work."

They need inspiration? Why don't they look at our gigantic debt? That should be all in the inspiration they need.

Ridiculous.
