Possible Total Immersion Advancement

I was on CNN this morning, and I found an article on fingerprint study and their assistance in improving robotic/prosthetic hands. Then I started thinking... one of the greatest hurdles in total immersion virtual reality is simulating the full range of senses. Would it not be an amazing experience to feel as though you've been teleported to another place where you can feel the soft grass on your feet, and smell the fresh, warm summer air? Sure this is a long way off...

I'm curious to know if anyone else has come across other, new advancements in the scientific/technological communities that could potentially apply to this extreme virtual reality system? What do you think are the repercussions we face as a society if you could just plug yourself into a machine and experience anything you desire. Would it just lead to happier people? Would people always be plugged in?

you can actually do what your talking about doing right now. The technology already exists! Its called lucid dreaming and once you've mastered it you can do whatever you would like in this world and it feels as if you are experiencing it in your everyday waking life.

It takes some dedication but it rally opens your eyes up to the fact that you are more than your body and in that world you can fly, make up anything you want and it appears before your eyes!. Im telling you from personal experience it is possible! Good luck on your journey!

I've experienced lucid dreaming... in fact I do quite frequently. Total Immersion virtual reality is definitely different. Think of it as a means for an artist to "create another world" for others to experience.

I have never really thought about virtual reality in that much depth because it has never really proved to be that virtualy real, but this certainly got my mind purring.

If you could mix this idea with the artificial visual stimulus for the blind, straight to the brain, the possibilities would be endless.

Imagine what opportunities that could bring the disabled or the deaf and blind.
