haha so you aren't even a scotish nationalist your just a northerner! Oh well enjoy your pie.
I like the north, nice area -plenty of good land and business's and stuff, tell me why are we arguing about scotland again?

As for the north, what's your problem with London? The reason we have all the nice things that Britain has made is because of the great partnership between the industrial north and the academic south - you can't go dancing without legs and a head

Hi people.

Thank you all the reply's on this thread.
Ok the snow itself is not a sitx but for some of the populas will be finding it tough.
But now is a good time to look at your planning and preparedness for cold snaps and weather.

Where I live, the council had not even bothered to grit the roads.
Watching people struggle to drive was a bit hairy at some points on my journey to work but I got there ok on foot.

Well all the best tonight and keep warm.

Nowt wrong with London , just having some light relief, I'm British by an unwanted act of political union, English by the grace of god and a northerner by pure good fortune. Scotland!!!!!! well yes Scotland is Scotland which makes me even more proud to be English

What was it they said about about Scotland on that late night TV show a while back, Scotland is a perfect example of what happens when you mix Alcohol with Socialism

Cheers

I know it sounds silly to some, but i think this is a great thread for this forum.

As colec says, it's what it can lead to that could effect us in a major way. It shows that whilst many here think of Sit X as a major disaster that could impact on the population as a whole, there are those out there that would view a weather blip like this as thier own personal Sit X.

You see thats where i think the "Sit X" classificaton list at the top of this forum falters slightly. You can have your own Sit X right there in your own home and the outcome could still be as harmfull as a major incident.

If the situation i am stuck in is a risk to my life, i would consider that "the S hitting TF"!

Take where i live, a small forest village. We have a railway station, today nothing was running due to the weather. Buses were limited too.

Cars were ok later today, but very risky this morning.

Most of the village relies on the local supermarket for it's food. If they don't get deliveries because the lorries can't get through, thats when it starts getting tricky.

Luckily these weather bouts don't usualy last that long here, but if it were to last even a week, i guaruntee some people would be running out of food.

Couple with that the amount of people who's heating is going up the shoot because of burst pipes and the likes, some people could find themselves in severe trouble.

We have tons of elderly here who unlike me, can't hike into the next town for food.

I must admit though, i find it amazing how many people go into a blind panic when a few of the luxuries in life are taken away from them. People are so pre-occupied with the latest gadget, they forget the basics to keep them alive if the need came.

Anyway, my kids were off school today so we were over the woods practising hunting each other with snowballs lol
On the way back i stopped into the supermarket and loaded my bag up with food that would last me easily a week, even without my cupboard and stocked food. Plus more firelighting gear and water. Just that little extra security.

It's like the old saying, "Watch the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves". If you prepare for the smaller, more personal "Sit X", when the big one comes, hopefully we should weather it more comfortably. up:

CX.

The BBc news have just said that there is now an extreme weather warning out for the north of England for tonight, and the snowfalls could be as much as 30 cms in the next few hours.

Not a good idea to be going anywhere I think.

And Raider....I have been reading and taking note of all the Scottish comments coming from your direction....and there are a lot, I have to say....

I was quite pleased to be wearing my norgie when I left the house this morning. The guy in the office called me about 6:30am to see how I was getting on. He agreed with my assessment that everything was okay considering. The only problem was there were other people on the roads. He thought I was joking when I said I'd packed my sleeping bag. I'm pleased I didn't need it. In my early morning haste I had packed my BOB but completely neglected my coat, wallet, radio, extra water and extra food (didn't want to raid my BOB unless essential).

One afterthought I did remember was a good book. Boredom is almost as bad as hunger (well, not really but you get the point).

Oh, NR. You should ease off the Jock-bashing. Don't you know it's rude to mock the afflicted?

Oh Heck I hope Caitlin is offline

Slightly more seriously race and culture is a real issue in survivalism, and I dont just mean the racist ultra right wing rednecks who hate people because they have a better tan. I know of people from country A who have tried to settle in country B as survivalists and have been made in no uncertain terms very unwelcome. One is a survivalist author who had to basically sell up again and move to Yorkshire to get away from real threats of violence and intimidation from the residents of his host nation.
further my own Bro In law had his car wrecked because it had an England sticker on it while he was posted to another ppart of the UK.

Sadly for all of us some places that are geographically ideal for survivalists, home steaders, small holders and others, simply because you are from another nation you dare you settle in because the threat of violent racism is very real indeed.

Nope, Caitlin is not offline....*adding 18 more black marks to Raider's total*, and starting a list for Nirgal now too...
"Berserk" and "LASSIE!"" indeed....

Seriously, though, I'm absolutely horrified at the racism issue in survivalism...that's not what it's about at all. Maybe those who take survivalism a bit too personally see others as a threat in any situation...I can't understand that, and this part of the world *is* perfect for learning about self sufficience and survivalist tactics. How bad must it have been for someone to sell up and move. And to Yorkshire!

Stay warm, bunnies...

hehe i may be a key instigator in the scotland mocking, sorry - in the interest of full disclosure I should say that i actually love scotland and i'll be up their this summer with my camping gear, it's a shame though that when i am people have this terrible image that 'the south' is all posh bankers and money wasters - didn't scotland just spend £50milion (some of it from england) on a painting which they could just show a replica of? Doesn't scotland have it's own corrupt government and dodgy businessmen? It's not a geographic location, a race of people or anything like that which is causing the problems with the world today -it's people, it's the world of greed and ego which is messing everything up and by blaming everyone else while trying to avoid the real issue we're just making it worse.

If we could agree whats important, if we could work together to achieve them -maybe then we would get somewhere. The north is no less corrupt than the south, no more or less important, it's like choosing a finger to cut off or an organ to remove -we work best when we work together.

Essex snow has stopped for the last few hours, sky still looks like it has some more in it though -maybe we'll get some more overnight.

Yes, and it's headed by Gordon Brown, Darling (English born but still a Scot), Alexander among others.

Well the weather seemed to warm a little down south last night.
I was glad as I made it out last night to play my league darts and got the win.

Back to topic.

This morning the some of the roads had re-frozen and we were hit with another small snow fall around 7:45.
Most of the snow now has disappeared, but I believe there is a forecast for snow on Thursday.

On the way in to work I witnessed a Lady driver trying to get round one of them small roundabouts to fast, only to turn right and carry straight on and smashed the front bumper into a raised curb.
I thought, why oh why does practically no-one ever try to slow down with the cars gears then the roads are icy.

I hit the A331 (Surrey/Hants) about 8 am and we were picking our way along without incident.

1 hour later on the same stretch someone managed to park their vehicle among the trees on the verge. Perhaps two fire tenders was overkill, perhaps not.

Nearly got a bit to smug myself this morning, I past a smoldering 16 tonner truck embedded in a chaps fron garden about two feet from his house. There was loads of fire tenders, wreckers cops etc attending and I thought to myself thats a bit of overkill for one truck with a small diesel fire.

Not till I got right along side did realise the truck was carrying 1 ton bags of nitrate fertiliser............... ferty and diesel being componants of IEDS.

I got the hell out of there just in case, discretion being the better part of valour.

As CX, has stated above ....... This mini-sit X (Adverse weather) has/is been an ideal time to review any cold weather preparations.

I am pleased to say that all mine and partners cold weather clothing/boots purchases back in October 2008 have been worn and tested. She isnt so condescending now that she has worn them and is glad that I purchased them for her ........ more on order now.

This little 'episode' has highlighted a few 'gaps' that I had in the clothing department and shall now be rectified, ie: Long Johns and a decent pair of gloves.

Keep warm all ..... more snow is forcasted for the end of the week.

Good reply there Wotan.
Sometimes we all need a bit of a reality check from time to time.

I have been looking at my plans and supplies and agree that a pair or 2 of long johns will be on my shopping list as well as a new pair of gloves.

Just before Christmas I purchased one of them big luminous coats at a local market. £10 for an orange one or £15 for a yellow one.
I brought the orange one, its heavy duty, warm and has reflective strips.
I brought it for such an occasion of cold winter weather or heavy rain.
A few friends had a laugh at me on Monday morning but they were not laughing when I got to work dry and warm and work friends were freezing.

Best £10 I have spent in along time.

Happy to hear that all of you are going well and keeping a smile on your faces.
Sounds a lot like what happens in Las Vegas when they get snow. We still have some snow from the 24th of December here. They did not plow the roads until we had about 4 inches on the roads. Made the drive in to work that morning a little interesting.

If any of you are on LP gas for your home I would go out and check the connections and pipes, the ice and snow can damage these and we have had houses blow up as a result of gas leaks.

If you do not drive in snow as a rule make sure that you do not have ice build up on your breaks. Went out one morning to go to work and the truck would not move, ice had froze in the drums.

All of you take good care and stay warm. Best wishes from a former outpost.
