NEWS: U.S. To Approve Israel's Plan For Future Borders

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is visiting Washington this week, where he will receive a letter from President George Bush. Portions of this letter state that the United States will not ask Israel to return to the 1949 borders (Green Line), which were drawn up in a cease-fire agreement by the U.N. Instead, the letter states that the final border will be determined by "demographic realities" This means that all the land that is primarily occupied by Israeli settlements could now be recognized as officially belonging to Israel.

Israel will not be asked in the future to withdraw to the 1949 cease-fire lines (the Green Line) on the West Bank, according to a letter U.S. President George Bush is to present to Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in Washington this week.
According to the letter, the determination of borders in a final status accord will take into consideration "demographic realities" on the ground. Israel also expects that the Bush administration will support the planned route of the separation fence.

The main purpose behind the meeting between Sharon and Bush is to discuss Sharon's Gaza disengagement plan, and what support the U.S. will give Israel in return. Apparently, the favor will be returned in full. The U.S. is prepared to recognize Israel's right to all of the land it currently occupies in the West Bank, and will support the planned path of the separation fence. The separation fence could end up becoming the new border in the U.S. backed "Road Map" for peace.

I'm not sure I understand why Israel needs or wants our approval. I think it is interesting that they are meeting at the White House, instead of the more traditional Camp David setting:

They will meet in the residential wing of the White House, to emphasize Bush's support for Sharon. A proposal to hold the discussion at the presidential retreat in Camp David was rejected because of Israeli concern that it retains a negative image as the place where the Israeli-Palestinian peace process collapsed four years ago.

I think this may have something to do with the US support of Sharon's Gaza plan. Once again, if you follow the money, the answers will reveal themselves.
