I get the feeling everyone is medicated

I feel like everyone is on some kind of psych drugs...either illegal drugs, or perscriptions: benodiazapines like xanax or pharmaceutical opiates like oxycontin, or else antidepressants.

Is the only way people can deal with this insane society to hit themselves over the heads with a chemical hammer?

When historians look back on this period I think they will see it like the Opium War era of China, where one out of every 2 adults was addicted. I think way more people are blitzed on some substance or other than is acknowledged.

Haven't had cable in 5 years. Best thing ever for my blood pressure and sanity.
Best way to deal with this society sans drugs is to avoid all regularly scheduled programming and strictly avoid anything called "News".
By doing this you allow yourself to pick and choose your sources of information and avoid a major portion of the crap that makes you want to do evil things to your fellow man.

Avoid the American media at all costs.
