Obama can instill civic responsibility – through a mandatory Youth Corps

What are your feelings on capitilizing on our youth makining such things as mandatory? For that would the government just re install the draft and make our youth sign up or would prison time be punishment if your youth decides they dont want to be part of this slave labor.
Your thoughts America.

Thanks for posting the article....yes, other countries, especially in European nations have mandatory "service" requirements.

At this time it is not mandatory....but it sounds a lot like Job Corps. minus the offer for Jr. College.

Do I think it will work??? Not in my opinion....I agree that EDUCATION is good...but it is something that is better remembered when it isn't being jammed down someones throat by being mandatory.

That is ridiculous.

A "Youth Corps" is just a polite way to say "Engineering Nazis."

Its the same way the Third Reich brainwashed its youth, with "Youth Corps."

Obama can take it and shove it for all I care, and my children will not serve in any such thing.

Same here. Education should still be the formost on Americas mind and instilled on our youth. It should be taken away from the money hungry capitals and given freely for those youths serious enough to go.
I was always college minded and willing in my youth but found so many obsticles in my way with not qualifing for finacial aid when I needed it most.
Now I have degrees and want the same for my children in the next generations and am fearful what will happen by then with rising costs and now this presidency getting involved.
Something needs to change, but is that change what really needs to happen?

Thanks for your reply
....but, I see it that if one is EDUCATED....which is different from being SCHOOLED, especially in the system we already have....why does one need a piece of paper to say that they are able to do a certain line of work?

What needs to change is our youth need to be educated, not schooled in an antiquated system, and mandatory requirements of sending youth to a "camp" to be "re-educated" in this same antiquated system is not the answer either. It should be up to all of us that are EDUCATED to teach....not those that are just system drones. The change will come when REAL TEACHERS are unfettered and allowed to teach in a way that fits each child....'cause none of us learns the same....unless of course we are so indoctrinated we have lost the ability to THINK FOR OURSELVES.

My biggest fear is that large corporations will try and horn in on this.Imagine the excitement of CEOS with the introduction of such a large low paid labor pool.
What is defined as helpful to the Nation will have to be VERY carefully defined.

Reading through this, first thing that I could relate this back to is the current Americorp Vista program.

A group of volunteers who get, um, trained to be a volunteer, than go somewhere in the US to become a paid volunteer for up to three years.

Not sure how many reading this are at all familiar with the program, and from the outside, it looks like its all well and good. People sign up to work with various entities, most not for profits, around the country, live off very little money and "make a difference."

Inside, its a little different. I actually went through the process years back to become a Vista supervisor. Ive seen wasted money by the government before, but this was a thing of beauty. At the end of the day, the only thing anyone learned, was that it is your duty to your country to impoverish yourself for the greater good.

I know alot of people who have been Vistas, a couple are good, hardworking people who were looking for a change in their lives. Most however, feel that by working for the greater good and allowing the government to take care of their food/shelter/etc... they are making the world a better place. Some have gone a step beyond and become professional volunteers, whatever that is.

Imagine if everyone had to work for 3 or 5 years in and around communities to make us all a little better, a little safer. In the end, what do you get? A pile of wasted time and money so those elected can say to the sheep that they are now better off, and an entire legion of people saying they feel good about what they have done and pledge to work for everyones betterment while they stay impoverished.

Great, just the type of things I so enjoy paying for.

Ok, at first it started to sound like the military were you get your basic pay, training and the government pays for the rest. Then your sent were they feel your needed even community service when natural disasters happen. Also sounds like there might be some ranking as well.
Even todays standards have made most enlisted service members impovershed.
AmeriCorps
Notice the whole U.S. federal government program reference.
Was created by President Bill Clinton when he signed the National and Community Service Trust Act of 1993.
Now with the new/old Clinton/Obama administration more pieces are falling into place.
Thanks for the reference..

Hmm..

•Have increased real-world experience.

•Be more worldly wise.

•Have knowledge of a skill or trade.

•Better understand how various aspects of the nation work.

•Be more fiscally self-sufficient.

•Have the opportunity to pursue a free junior-college education.

I had to pay for my college education ... that hasn't landed me a job.. and I have 13 years of experience.

But this sounds more like the conditioning for a Obama-Nazi America. Or perhaps the beginning of this "Civil Defense Force" Obama talked about.

Thats right, now compare it to Wiki's reference on Americorps and why would he decide to Mandate an exisitng Federal program for our youths?
Socialism at its finest. Let the Government dictate how the people live there lives and keep them impoverished without the means to even defend themselves.
