Theres a difference between disiplineing your children at home and in public, this being the "percieved actions" and the actuall ones. Don't beat your kids in public if you chose to do so do it at home in moderation and only when nessacary.

3 swats each on the thigh is not a beating. And how many times do you hear people complain on an airplane about unruly children and the parents doing nothing.

You can't have it both ways.

Ok, well Im tired of reading all this BS about this being a good thing. Because ITS NOT. Do you people that support this idiotic idea not realize what is going to happen. Its just going to make things worse. The youth of today will take being forced into doing these things as a punishment. What happens when you enforce too strict or punishment in general on a young youth? They rebel. Duh you morons. As for this being a good idea, yea on a case by case basis. Take the truely trouble youth and put them through this, however, for those that are just fine there is no reason to put them through this BS. They did nothing to deserve it, they do what they are supposed to and excel.
This is a terrible idea. I for one do not agree with the requirement to serve simply because it should be a voluntary act on that persons behalf. I am 23 and currently enlisted in the Marines, I am at the moment deployed to Iraq. Those who are forced to join are not going to come over here and be willing to fight for anything except the chance to go home. I fight for the Marines to my left, right and behind me because they are my brothers. If I have to jump on a grenade to keep many of my Marines alive then so be it, the life of one for the many is worth it to me. You will not see that same attitude from these forced into the service. They will hate their lives therefore they will hate their country. Hello, wake up, what happened with Veitnam, anyone remember that era of history. Most of those who were FORCED to go fight came back and hate this country, so what makes you think today it will be any different. You people are nieve and are blinded by this new president. He is a great talker and you are all like his little sheep who he is leading out to pasture. Nothing good will come of this. What about all those people who do extra-curricular activities during school. Do you think they are going to have time to juggle school, homework, those activities plus do 50 hours of communitry service a month. Doubtful. What happens to those unfortunate ones who become parents at a young age? I personally know about this part. My daughter was born when I was 17. I moved out of my grandparents house, took a full time job, went to school, and raised my daughter. Now tack on a mondatory 50 hours of extra FREE work and the decision will have to be made as to which of those other things will have to falter. This idea is stupid plain and simple, for those of you who agree with him I say this. Get your heads out of your butts and see the light of day for once. He has blinded you all. What do you really know about Obama, he sure doesnt like to disclose his past with you, seems kinda funny to me. I believe he is the start of the downfall of our country and I for one have to put up with it because he is my boss.
You can say its a good thing all you want, but realize this. Most of the youth today are not degenerates, and they are the ones who are going to be screwed by this new thing Obama is wanting. Community service was reserved for those screw ups when I was growing up, and should stay that way. You punish the masses for the actions of a few and the masses will turn out like those few because they are being treated the same so why not act the same. Psychologically speaking, he is going to turn more youth bad then he is good. I for one know when I was growing up that when I would have to do things for stuff I didnt do, I just went and did what I was being punished for because hey, Im being punished for it so why not do it. That is how the youth of today think, so when your kids start being degenerates remember my words and remember that Obama is the cause.

-edit-
As for punishing your kids, you cant in these days or you risk jail time. I for one say this. I spank my daughter or son and get arrested I will knock the cop out. Then they will have a real reason to arrest me and thats exactly what Ill tell the judge.

Yeah good quote from Starship Troopers, which IIRC the actual book was about facism and facist states.

My question is this...

What about kids (like mine) who already volunteer a lot of time? My daughter volunteers at the local animal shelter on weekends and at a Vet's office 3 days a week. (average 25 hours a week total)

This is actually NECESSARY for her goals for the future... becoming a Veterinarian.

Does the time she already puts in count, or will she be forced to give even more time for Obama's programs?

Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury, let's talk money. All these kids' work (in another thread about this crappy idea kids was defined as the 0-25 age bracket), how much would it be in hard cold cash per year?

If selflessness is taught at a young age, populations are less likely to grow into a greedy, cynical, egotistical, supremacist, apathetic state of mind, kind of like many today.[edit on 1/20/2009 by DYepes]

I don't believe that it's the government's job to teach my kids to be "selfless." Parents should be responsible for such things - not the government. My kids are 6 and 8 and they volunteer EVERY WEEK at the nursing home AND at the animal shelter. Even small children can make a difference in their community. Would they have ever thought to do these things if I hadn't suggested it and taken them to the places? Not at their age now and maybe not even in the future. It amazes me how many kids (most) do absolutely no form of volunteering. The word here is "volunteering" not forced service. Obama wants to force service. That's wrong.

My kids have "adopted" a 96 yr old woman at the nursing home. She is nearly blind with macular degeneration and extremely hard of hearing. Every week they help her play bingo and they spend about an hour visiting with her in her room. She loves to hear about what they're up to. Imagine how it would be if EVERY parent took their children to a nursing home or hospital to visit/help, every week, VOLUNTARILY. Wow, the world would be an awesome place.

My kids also go to the animal shelter. They help to socialize the kittens, adult cats and dogs. Yes, that means they just play with them for an hour, but helping a pet to be accustomed to children will him that pet to get adopted. As they get older, I suspect they will begin doing actual work at the shelter - scooping dog poop and litter boxes, cleaning cages, etc. But for now, at their current ages, playing witht he animals is the perfect way to help.

It ticks me off when I hear teenagers say that their lives are so boring. Get a job. Volunteer. Get off your butts and out from in front of your computer screens and get a life!

By the way, my kids are homeschooled.

Ahh socialism, I thank you for being open about it.

I do not think capitalism is working right now, as we are not
following it for one thing.

Subsidizing bad behaviour is socialism and it is what we have been doing.

Because someone worked hard and made good money does not
mean they need to give over 50% of their efforts to ppl that sit
at home and play Xbox like you claim to be a bad thing.

This country has so much wrong with it on the greed front, and it
is not just one party, it is both.

I do not think the country can be salvaged from this wreck.

Especially not by an appeaser.

You cannot make everyone happy, it just doesn't happen.

We are going the way of Rome, and the parallels are huge.

The glorification of sports, equals all the days of games that were held.

Instead of slaves we have cheap 3rd world labor, and illegal immigants.

700+ bases in over 130 countries ?

It sounds all too familiar.

One pro mentioned was that kids would get experience needed for jobs. This is true for how things are now. Anyone right now can go volunteer and put that on a resume as experience. But remember that once it becomes mandatory it becomes the norm.

Trying to get a job is competitive; once everyone does something they'll need to do something greater to remain competitive. Not all jobs actually do require any experience but only choose people with experience because they are the better candidate for the job (worth more on paper). There was a time when someone being educated in a school at all was a desirable thing. Now everyone goes to school and it isn't enough to land a job.

The only possible outcome of this is that kids will need to do even more to get hired for some gateway job, while still going to school trying to achieve their end career. Who will work hardest? The youths who already work hard. The slackers won't suddenly become motivated to get careers, and to be blunt, someone has to clean the toilets. We're not all capable or able to be doctors.

Maybe this work harder idea isn't bad for some kids, but some on the other hand are already hard working and it's unfair of you to decide to place even more burden on them, you have no place to decide this for someone elses children.

I don't dispute that volunteering and getting kids to do more are good things with good outcomes and I don't think anyone here yet has disputed that. But it needs to be a choice by their own free will to have a better effect, if it isn't a choice then it isn't volunteering.

Most important is that people need to shift the attitude more away from "the government knows what's best for my kids" and more into "I know what's best for my kids because I've sat down and thought about it, and since I love my kid I will do what's best for them".

Congrats on bringing up a daughter who is doing that.

I hope it will allow kids to choose where they volunteer. Better to have some finding a way to get out of it than to make it too inflexible.

It averages out at only one hour a week with 2 weeks off each year, but even that would be a burden to her when she already does so much.

I'm one of the advocates of free thinking and free action.

I've been contemplating joing the military for a while. However I don't believe in the current fights that are being fought for. I would fight in dire circumstances to protect another or myself but I have an extreme value on the sanctity of life.

If we get emposed to be forced to enlist in a "civilian military" I better get paid and I better be able to get a non-combat position. (if I were to get drafted i would object, and I'd prolly end up in prison if I couldnt get something that wasn't directly related to killing another).

Like everything else on this board some of you are going waaaay too far with this. Why don't you read/research how the Hitler Youth Corp was actually started and how it progressed. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion (I'm referencing historical fact regarding the HYC, which isn't an opinion, it's fact). If you are going to be an active participant in a board discussion you should really do your homework first. Not only does that statement discredit your argument but it's a false and unappropriate reference that others may take into account as fact.

Fight the power! Fight Taxation without representation! Fight forced labor!

History repeats for those who ignore it.

"We're from the Government and we're here to bring your kids to the labor and reeducation camp. If you resist we take you to jail. If they resist, we'll remind them that work makes them free."

I really dont see how anything you just said is relevant. The welfare state isn't the topic of discussion.

What we're wondering is how Obama proposes to rebuild America using fascism. America isn't up the creek because of lazy kids or parents, it's up the creek because of bankers, wall street, and GW bush.

Having some real policy aimed at the real problems would really help America. But lets keep bailing out those banks.

The day Government has the power to blatantly in our face tell us that they own our lives is the day we have lost our Republic and the principles this country was founded upon.

This is nothing short of a backdoor draft, Why would I be forced to volunteer for this crap and get no pay, when I can join the Military and get paid?

Look deeper folks.

Yeah we got ourselves into this. The big banks, the big companies, and now they want the kids to work there butts off for free. Come on that wont help our economy at all. As for there back door draft they can kiss my back side. Shoot, if someone wants to get killed in a war then they want to get payed for being over seas or fighting not do it for free.

Wow. You really need to leave America. You'd be better suited for a life in China or Russia so you can experience firsthand what life is like when the government controls society. You are the complete opposite of a true American, and it's people with your delusional, idealistic opinions that are the true downfall of America. People like you are the exact reason why children are in trouble today - you're for replacing parents with government. Kids are slobs because their parents don't raise them, and their parents don't raise them because the government has grown so large and taxes and the cost of living are so high (while the US Dollar is so low) and it's too expensive for parents to stay home and raise their kids.

Cut the government by 75% (as 3/4 of it as of now is unnecessary). Parents will be able to afford to stay home and raise their kids again. You live in a fantasy world.

I really didn't know that so many Americans would have liked to live in the USSR
That's where we're headed. Like was said before, why don't these people move to a communist country where the government already dictates the lives of its citizens. Our nation was founded on liberty and freedom, not having the government control our lives. How the hell are people supposed to pay bills when they have a ton of "community service" to do at the government's behest? Helping the community IS a good thing, when its voluntary. I guess the constitution really is "just an old piece of paper" to our elected leaders. Enjoy the "good ol' days" folks while you still can because we may be heading down a rocky road.

If you read the books, "The Shadow Party" and "The Audacity of Deceit", you will see this has all been planned by Obama and his billionaire friends. This work program is the Obama version of "Hitler's Youth". These teenagers will be indoctrinated into absolute adoration and obedience to Obama. They will be bought with money and spiffy uniforms.

Why do you people so easily give ownership of your bodies and your children's bodies to a fiction?

Government and Corporations are fictions people, they are not living, breathing entities.

People really need to examine their belief systems.
