The Book of Revelation is very ambiguous and vague...its predictions can be (and have been) intepreted in thousands and thousands of ways. This vagueness and flexibility has kept people guessing for 2000 years, and I'd wager that 2000 years from now people will still be scratching their heads over the imagery used in Revelation and trying to shoehorn this or that current event into the framework that the book puts forth.

Psychedelic mushrooms do indeed grow wild on the Island of Patmos, where John had the visions that comprise the book. Perhaps he had a little fungal "inspiration" while stranded there...that seems at least as likely as any of the other explanations I've heard over the years.
