New Bloodtype linked to HIV resistance

RESEARCHERS have uncovered a link between blood types and resistance to HIV. Scienceblog.com reports that researchers from the Canadian Blood Service, SickKids, and Lund University in Sweden “have discovered that certain blood types are more predisposed to contracting HIV, while others are more effective at fending it off.” Tstudy shows that cells from people who produce a rare antigen, “the Pk blood group” are much less prone to HIV infection. “This study is not suggesting that your blood type alone determines if you will get HIV,” said the study’s lead author Dr. Don Branch. But the finding may lead to better therapy.

My further news and google research shows that 1 in a million people have this bloodtype, but it isn't like our normal (-+) A / B / O / AB blood types, as you can have this blood type and be one of those blood types as well.

What it is going to result in is a treatment, and a preventative for AIDS within the next 5 years according to a radio interview on CBC radio1 here in the glorious empire of canada.

There are numerous 'minor' blood group proteins in addition to the two groups of which we are all aware: the A/B group and the Rh (c/d/e) groups. These other groups present little antibody risk for most people where the A/B and Rh groups can present problems (transfusions and childbirth). Most commonly they become an issue for people who have received large numbers of transfusions.
