What would you do if a 50 billion dollar scam was about to collapse around you? Wouldn't you have a contingency plan?

I think I'd take a big pile of money and disappear. But how? If you run, everyone will be looking for you. The only way to be sure you could stay hidden would be to trick everyone into not looking.

Why not hire a body double? Let him confess to your crimes and appear in court on your behalf. While he's smiling for the cameras and living the high life in your penthouse you could carefully cover your back trail, complete extensive plastic surgery, and establish a new identity.

Once you're securely hidden away, you could send word back to your body double that it's OK to reveal the big lie. The double would face a few minor charges, but his legal troubles would pale in comparison to the huge pay-off sitting in his overseas account.

Brilliant you should be a stock broker or investment banker.

if that was the plan, he wouldn't have hit his best friend up for $250 million a mere weeks before the operation collapsed.

he'd have quietly skipped town.

here's the thing, while everyone is railing about how much money madoff stole from them, nobody is talking about how much they withdrew from their accounts over the years. none of the investors who were invested with Avellino & Bienes blinked before reinvesting with madoff when they were given back their money, dollar for dollar.

Who would be that stupid?
Knowing full well the guy ripped off everyone who crossed his path , a look alike even, would be an idiot to think he would receive any payout that no one else would.
Good old Bernie would take THAT money and run too.
Unless of course, Mr. look alike is waiting for diamonds in the mail.

aiding and abetting is a crime. nobody would take the money and then pose as a man who is turning himself in. you are going to wind up in prison, no doubt, death is likely once behind bars.

nobody would take the money.

It's really him. He probably thought about running...luckily for everyone, there is no place to run or hide. At least not anything a guy like that could handle.

As a general rule the only place left to run is the deep wilderness. If he wants to go out there to die, I say let him go.

There was another guy convicted of some kind of fraud and sentenced to prison. The day he was supposed to surrender, he faked a suicide. He showed up months later to do his time.

Prison is preferable to the alternative.
