UK Jews demand Israeli ceasefire

Contrary to assertions made in some threads in this forum, the support for the Israeli action in Gaza among Jewish communities globally is far from unanimous.

A couple of days ago a protest in Canada made the news when Jewish women occupied the Israeli consulate in protest at what was happening. This letter is written by people describing themselves as "passionate supporters of Israel", who nevertheless think the current military campaign completely unjustified.

There is no conspiracy, Zionist or otherwise, involved in this horrific episode. The reality is in many ways less comfortable - we have on our hands an utterly barbaric regime obstinately set on a hugely bloody, disproportionate and utterly ineffective conflict against a largely defenceless civilian population.

There should be no excuses, and that the US government is actively offering them is shameful and inflammatory - but not conspiratorial, just stupid. Let's hope this particular protest contributes in some way to showing this madness up for what it is.

The joint letter, sent to the Guardian, was extremely suave and polite in their remarks. Many of the signatures are Israeli's and it is extremely facetious (puerile too) to suggest "all Jews support Israel."
There is another protest in London today, many non-Jews will be attending the event to demand a ceasefire alongside the British Jewish Board.

Police are increasing security today in order to prevent another incident from last night - numerous anarchists and extreme left wing activists were behind the violence.

It was tragic the radical left van-guarded themselves into a voracious desire to implement acts of violence.

Tragic but, I'm afraid, typical. It's ten years since I was a student, but whenever we marched against anything then, there would those who tried to get peaceful demonstrations turned into violence and antagonism. Seems to me "radical" anything is to be avoided where at all possible...
