And the second main reason for the attack is because Hamas was signaling that it wanted a diplomatic settlement of the conflict along the June 1967 border. That is to say, Hamas was signaling they had joined the international consensus, they had joined most of the international community, overwhelmingly the international community, in seeking a diplomatic settlement.
And at that point, Israel was faced with what Israelis call a Palestinian peace offensive. And in order to defeat the peace offensive, they sought to dismantle Hamas.
(snip)
Every year, the United Nations General Assembly votes on a resolution entitled “Peaceful Settlement of the Palestine Question.” And every year the vote is the same: it’s the whole world on one side; Israel, the United States and some South Sea atolls and Australia on the other side. The vote this past year was 164-to-7. Every year since 1989—in 1989, the vote was 151-to-3, the whole world on one side, the United States, Israel and the island state of Dominica on the other side.

Here is an interesting article on the war in Gaza.
It is pretty clear who doesnt want to go for a diplomatic settlement but choose to try and settle their score with war.
The reasons for this war look ugly, the retoric to jusify it the same.
Most people in the world want to solve this conflict in a diplomatic way, it looks like israel and the US are the few main ones blocking the whole peace proces.
We sunk pretty low again for these countries to think its ok to bombard any one they feel like, including large civilian populations, to meet their goals.
And the rest of the world stands by, shocked and awed.

"And the rest of the world stands by, shocked and awed."

They are shocked and awed when they should be saying "well we saw that one coming"

Israel gave warning.

GAZA CITY (AFP)--Israel dropped leaflets on Gaza City on Saturday, urging residents to leave their homes as speculation mounted that a ground offensive in the overcrowded territory was imminent.

Hamas never gave warning. Hamas Attacks.

May 2, 2004: An Israeli woman, in her eighth month of pregnancy, was shot dead along with her four daughters when two Palestinian terrorists fired on their car at the entrance to the Gaza Strip settlement bloc of Gush Katif. After the car spun off the road after the initial attack, the terrorists approached the vehicle and shot the occupants at close range.

March 6, 2008: Eight men, seven of them teenagers, were killed when a Palestinian gunman entered the Merkaz HaRav Yeshiva in Jerusalem and opened fire. The terrorist also wounded nine in the attack before he was killed at the scene.

How does the song go?

1, 2, 3, 4 Hamas starts all the wars.

5, 6, 7, 8 Israel retaliates.

Yes many people have been killed on both sides.
Thats why there is peace needed.
And isreal seems to block the proces.
Would you care to comment on that maybe?

So by the looks of it Israel "is" in the bussines of regime change.
It looks that that is one of the major reasons for this invasion of Gaza, to kill of the democraticly choosen government of palestine.

The United States and Israel are considering a campaign to starve the Palestinian Authority of cash so Palestinians would grow disillusioned with their incoming militant Hamas rulers and return ousted Fatah moderates to power, The New York Times reported on Tuesday.

The newspaper, which quoted unidentified U.S. and Israeli sources, said this approach was being discussed at the highest levels of the U.S. State Department and the Israeli government. The ultimatum to Hamas will be either to recognize Israel's right to exist, abandon violence and accept previous Palestinian-Israeli agreements, or risk isolation and eventual collapse, the newspaper said.

The war that Israel launched on Gaza Dec. 27 is the seventh war of choice Israel has launched against its neighbors since 1973, the last year in which it fought a war that was forced upon it.

Of the seven wars one – in Lebanon, 1978 – had the goal of establishing an Israeli-controlled "security zone" running inside Lebanon's border with Israel. The other six, including the present war on Gaza, all aimed at imposing a "forced regime change" on Arab communities neighboring Israel through the violent physical dismantlement of politico-military structures then present in, or on occasion dominating, those societies.

So it looks like the israel government is willing to bombard these "regimes" and their civilians out of their countries so they can be taken over.
I suppose they think that if the US can do it now, they can do it to.
