Family wants police charged in New Orleans killing

www.cnn.com

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- As fireworks exploded over the Big Easy on New Year's Eve, 22-year-old Adolph Grimes III pulled up to his grandmother's home near the French Quarter after a five-hour drive from Houston, Texas.

Grimes, who relocated to Texas with his fiancée, Shae Whitfield, after Hurricane Katrina, couldn't wait to get home with their 17-month-old son, Chris, and ring in the new year with friends and family.

"He made it at 12 o'clock exact, with a second to spare," said his father, Adolph Grimes Jr.

Three hours later, Grimes lay dying on the sidewalk half a block from his grandmother's front door, with fireworks giving way to the hue of flashing police lights.

The Orleans Parish coroner said Grimes was shot 14 times, including 12 times in the back.

Grimes had just walked out of the house and was in a car waiting for his cousin, according to family members, when nine plainclothes officers -- part of an undercover narcotics task force driving around New Orleans on New Year's Eve -- surrounded Grimes' vehicle.

This is just another case of cops murdering people. He was shot 12 time IN THE BACK. and before someone jumps on this and says this guy was a criminal...Lets just look at the bottom of the page shall we?

"I just think it was some bad officers who were out there and imposing their will on the community," Jenkins said.

Jenkins also said that 48 bullet casings were found at the shooting scene. Police won't confirm or deny that number, but Riley defended his officers' actions.

''We train our officers to fire when fired upon. We train them to fire more than one shot,'' he said.

But the shooting doesn't make sense, relatives said, describing Grimes as a young man who was a loving father with a good job and no history of being in trouble.

His grieving mother and father said they won't be silenced and are not worried about a code of silence among officers, the so-called "blue wall."

"The walls are going to come down. Just like the walls of Jericho came down," Grimes' father said, trying to fight back tears

He may have had weapons, but this man was approached by plain clothes people with guns. As a gun owner I'd probably open fire if I had a bunch of unidentified individuals with guns coming at me for what I would perceive as no apparent reason. It does not appear that the man(Grimes) shot first. And the police aren't saying anything at all...Just like the BART case in San Fran.

The man had a legitimate permit to carry and it took 41 .40 cal acp bullits, of which they hit him 14 times. New Orleans cops should be strung up. Witnesses say he did absolutly nothing to rate the officers fireing at him. And the anti-gunners are worried that the citizens are too dangerous to protect them selves? Nagin and his crooks are getting worse than Daley in Chicago!

Absolutely disgusting. Right, it was just "some bad officers" but since they aren't mere civilians let's not make a big scene about it shall we? It was a mistake, mistakes happen right?
(even when its TWELVE SHOTS)

I would laugh so hard if the cops blamed "the guns" in the end.

They deserve to be put in jail.

If cops wanna get into the habit of murdering people like this, then they should expect to be met with the same amount of force, they should expect riots, they should expect anger. If murder is going to be the modus operandi of police forces then they should expect what the CIA calls blowback. And all the better.. FIGHT BACK!

I am all for the police to be charged, and how they get away with murder is beyond me.

I know what it is like to have these things done to you by the police, and most 99% of them are pure scum.

I wouldn't agree that 99% are scum. I'd say 10 percent are scum, ten percent are good, and the rest are dumb followers. Just like the rest of the population. It is a culture of complacency and unchecked power. Which, as we all know, corrupts.

You can not paint all cops with a good or bad. That is just like racial profiling.

From personal experiences The town or city its self dictates the good cop / bad cop ratio . I have lived in cities that 99% of the officers were just like Andy Griffith off of Mayberry . And another city was the opposite where 99% acted like Nazi SS officers personally trained by Josef Mengela .

I believe the city council Mayor and choice of the police chief create which ever type of police force they want by hiring practices and internal rules .The blue veil that separates the officers from the rest of us keeps the control out of our hands .

The remedy for a over zealous force is in my thoughts is as follows .
1 break down the blue veil and allow the courts to administer justice to the officers like they do to every one else
2 rebuild the command structure allowing for citizens over sight boards to have some form of power in directing the policy of the force .
3 ensure the Chiefs and all command personnel will protect the rights for both the officers and for the general public with neither being greater than the other .
4 mandate that all laws will be administered equally to citizens and to officers alike no favoritism.
5 if needed re evaluate all officers and reassign any who exhibit uncaring or anti social behavior to jobs with minimal public interaction .

This all sounds Orwellian to me. Im probably wrong, as I've never posted here before... The current government that we have just sounds a little socialistic to me... IMO...

The New Orleans cops are some the worst for being corrupt, this guy may have been on their drug turf.
And you know those glocks don't put finger on trigger unless ready to fire. One cop might have let one off on accident and there she goes, bad shots too only 14 out of 40 some.

Setup?

A plain clothes cop pulls a gun on him not identifying himself and he protects himself and then they have reason to fire back. He's firing on a police officer...?

Twelve shots in the back? Cowardliness. And these guys are suppose to protect the law? Their abilities to train these cops and remove any semblance of morality is scary and should frighten their own family members.

But I suspect they've been trained to not listen to the family either.

My 2cents

That is correct he was, indeed, a "Nubian". There are two stories about this sort of thing in the breaking news forum and one in current events. All are black men fairly young. All shot by police, two of which died. The other one is currently hospitalized after being shot in the chest in his own driveway.

Winnar!
Some guy told me that why nothing meaningful comes out of these cases is because certain laws still haven't been updated and nubians(my new favourite word ;p) are still chattel because of them.
Something to do with names. Like for example James Brown, what his name means is that his father's ancestors were owned by someone with the surname Brown. So if I remember correctly what I was told. This means that he is not using his real name so he can't get the same protection from the law as someone using a real name or something to that effect. He seemed pretty convincing but idk, anyone have the resources to look into this?

Off topic: 1. Hurray for Mickey Rourcke and Kate Winslet. About damn time!
