You know, I spend all day long speaking with policy makers and homeless advocates trying to find solutions to these problems. What are you doing?

Great topic OP, poignantly pertinent to the times we live in. Some of the posters here don't seem to grasp the concept of (to quote Don Henley), "In A New York Minute...". I have myself been headed up the ladder, only to without warning lose a job, and only by the grace of God pull myself together again. I have seen homelessness staring me right in the face, only to be fortunate enough that it did not happen. If any of you have "been somebody", then according to your employment status, you are "nobody", you can understand. If not, then count your blessings.

To be solution oriented:
Peter Samuelson, (movie producer) is involved with this project to help the homeless: Everyone Deserves a Roof

Much better than a cardboard box. I hope the "bum patrol" doesn't confiscate these when they find them.

This is truly terrible. But its not the first and is certainly not unexpected.
I think they will have to consider moving outside the city limits.
Some aid organizations need to setup a proper homeless camp outside the city where the stricter laws don't apply and people can at least have a tent in winter.
If people freeze to death because of this the city will need to be held accountable.

Lots of ppl freeze to death or die of heatstroke every year.

VERY few elected officials will do more than offer feigned sympathy.

If they want them out of sight they could hide them from the public eye.

If they really cared they would house them in the giant empty churches,
or the giant empty basketball courts, or the giant empty closed stores.

We have entire strip malls sitting empty here, and large warehouses.

We have hundreds of farmers PAID to not grow anything and square
miles of empty field just SITTING there.

This whole facade of the christians caring about the homeless is a farce.

They go to church for forgiveness because they KNOW they need it.

If they were really GOOD ppl they wouldn't NEED it.

Hypocrisy and Apathy are competing for who can disown the poor.

We have ppl that are millionaires a thousand times over that still
feel like they need more, and do nothing for the poor on the streets.

The greedy thieves at the top have nothing but contempt for the
slaves and lemmings at the bottom.

When they do some publicized charity event it is for some face time
on the camera and ppl still end up living on the streets, the so called
money never seems to make it to the ppl that need it.

If you get a chance watch the movie Dark Days about NYC where
ppl lived in the Train Tunnels so the cops and gang bangers would
leave them the hell alone.

That is what this country is turning into, the mole ppl living under
the city just like in ancient Rome.

The parallels to Rome are immense, billions spent for the games
for bread and circuses.

The college or pro sports spending billions and ppl dying in the streets.

The billions given to the churches every year, yet the supposed help
for the homeless never seems to make it to their hand while ppl
like Tammy Faye lived in mansions and had luxury cars.

The fact the sheeple cant see thru the lies is just more proof how
hopeless the state of morality of the nation has become.

Ppl are desperate for salvation and giving lip service to morality,
but when the buck meets the barrel head they will let the homeless
die from exposure.

If this is anything to go by, how long before the homeless start to 'disappear'?.
Clean up an area just so a stadium can be built? HMM..

How many, if the current economic downturn continues, will be able to afford the pure luxury of buying a ticket to sit in the stadium?

And its nice and reassuring to know that profits and property is placed before a life...... ( sacrasm)
I hope the story didn't say anything about the homeless shelter where these poor people can go.

The saying goes , you can judge how great a society is by the way it treats it's unfortunate..
Apparently the US isn't a great society anymore, How I pity it.

Is there some restriction that keeps people from camping on BLM land?

Yes actually. You can only camp in certin areas. Even if it is not at one of the campgrounds, you have specific areas you are limited to. Those areas typically can not be with in 900feet of a water sourse, on any type of vegitation, or near any trails. You have to "leave no trace", and even then you are limited to 7 to 14 days within any 28 day time period.

We have become one of the most immoral countries in the world!

How can they take people's shelters away and not let them at least get, what few possessions they have left?

That is disgusting!

What has happened to us? Why do we treat our fellow human beings with disdain and disregard?

At what point will we all stop talking about how disgusted we are with everything going on? At what time, will we stop just writing and posting about it on forums and get off our butts and do something?

Only when we are personally affected by it?

Many of those homeless are Iraq-Afghan Veterans.

You might want to do some research before spewing at the mouth.

As this recession/depression deepens, we will see many more tent cities and many more homeless people. It's just too bad that it has to happen to people before they open their eyes. That could be any of us tomorrow.

They won't have to build any shelters for the homeless, after all they have these boxcars on standby apparently, Put the homeless in those and then transfer them to the camps ( that aren't suppose to exist for enemy combatants)

It is sad that the same country that claims Jesus as their own won't lift a damned finger to be more like him and help the poor. We pride ourselves on moral high ground and generosity and yet we seem to lack the graces and the courage of conviction needed to actually act upon that which we speak of.
It is ridiculous. And yet I continue on. I work for this better future that even I know won't happen. Interesting times, perhaps...more accurately called the saddest of times.

Here is one of the camps that are not suppose to exist.

Beech Grove Amtrak Repair Station converted with military crane and train

Notice the massive buildings that have all windows boarded shut,
and all but one door.

Notice the barb wire leaning in.

Notice the 6" or 8" high pressure gas main bigger than what is
used to heat a Wal-mart Supercenter.
