In 2006, Israel heavily bombed Lebanon, resulting in almost 1200 civilian casualties on Lebanese side while 44 on Israeli side. Israel went to war over the kidnapping of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah. The war destroyed the lives of many innocent people and people are still dying as a consequence of the cluster ammunition, Israel felt necessary to use. Lebanon is a sovereign country that was collectively punished for the act of Hezbollah. With much bravado they claimed to quickly crush Hezbollah and make the soldiers return. Although Hezbollah was partly to blame, the response was very disproportional and likely already planned to happen when the time would be right, in order to show the IDF's power to its enemies.

The IDF greatly underestimated the capabilities of Hezbollah, which in terms of strength, is in no way comparable to Hamas. They had modern anti-tank weapons as well as anti-ship missiles, which almost sank an Israeli corvette.

Although Israel claimed to be the winner, in reality, they embarrassingly lost with over 100 IDF soldiers killed in action. More importantly, however, both goals of returning the kidnapped soldiers and crushing Hezbollah remained to be unachieved. Moreover, Hezbollah has tripled and diversified its missile and rocket stock to over 40,000 and has been supplied with longer range and more accurate missiles and other weapons, such as anti-tank weapons and UAVs.

Additionally, they have also been supplied with SAM capabilities, which was their Achilles heel during the 2006 conflict. Hezbollah could do nothing against Israel's air superiority. Israel has stated that the Syrian supplied SAM weapons has effected Israel's capability to conduct surveillance sorties over Lebanon, facilitating Hezbollah to receive smuggled weapons from Syria.

In fact, they have only reached the opposite of what they intended: Hezbollah has become more dangerous. It obtained blue prints from Israeli bunker complexes, which enabled to construct huge underground fortresses as well as an excellent communication network (supplied by their allies); which they lacked during the 2006 conflict. They now hate Israel more than ever before, especially now Israel has assassinated one of their leaders in early 2008. Next time they attack Israel with missiles, Israel only be able to do less damage than they did in 2006.

The objective of the Gaza operation was to stop the rocket attacks of Hamas. They are believed to have approximately 1000 rockets left and are firing tens a day into Israel. Moreover, their tunnel network to smuggle weapons through, is believed to consist of hundreds of tunnels. The reason being that Israel never considered these tunnels to a threat of such a level that they'd to do something about it. Now it is too late.

Janusfin brought up an interesting question in another thread, why doesn't Israel use
Counter-RAM systems to prevent rockets and mortar to hit any civilian objects in Israel? For those who don't know this military equipment, it is a system that destroys incoming rockets and mortar rounds in the air before they hit their ground targets.

Here you can see the sea-based Dutch platform: Goalkeeper:

Rockets are still being fired into Israel, and Israel is gonna lose once again without its objectives being accomplished. Yet, it fails to provide effective protection while the US military industry sponsors Israel with huge amounts of money. All they will reach is a large number of civilian casualties, collateral damage and more hate. The only way this conflict can be solved, is by words. We've seen what the decades of isolation has done to Iran and other ''rogue statues'', it worsened global security and increased the risk of terrorism.

Israel would definetly loose if the other arab countries like Syria, Lebanon, Iran would join the Palestinians. especially now when we do not have a USA ready to help fast (due to the change Bush/Obama and of involvment in other conflicts - Iraq, Afghanistan).

israel really could be in trouble even if the West Bank Palestinians wanted to get involved.

and the fact that it is not happening is the best evidence that arabian countries do not want to stike deadly Israel. they prefer to solve the problems Israel is causing with international help. UN, EU has to act more radical.

and whaen I read here on ATS all those pro-Israeli posts stateing that there is no way to deal with Palestinians as to rocket them I just want to ask, why the west bank hamas divisions are not doing the same as same people in Gaza?

the answer is really simple - in west bank, palestinians has got a minimum level of freedom. they can provide the most neccessary services for the citizens. the small shops, small manufacturies are working. people can earn money and spend. and they are normal people as we are. they want to to be safe and secure.

and this is something Israel did not allow to happen in the concentration camp - Gaza. there is a simple solution to all this problems over there. and these are not bombs but to let people live there in normal conditions and give them the freedom, country, land, possibilities. they will protect it then and never start the war again.

but Israel has totally different goals. it looks as they want to erase all the Palestinians from Gaza. and if they do thet, then other arabian countries won't hope for UN mediations any more and they will make the Israel poor...

The objective of the Gaza operation was to stop the rocket attacks of Hamas.

The rockets is an excuse for Israel to invade Gaza. The use of these ridicules devices has been going on for two years. Despite the misinformation being peddled by MSM and zionist apologists, these rockets were used after Israeli incursions in Gaza, after assassinations and then the blockade.

During this two year tit for Israeli massive tats, the Israelis could have directly targeted the racketeers but it didn't. Instead it plotted a siege, the stock piling of munitions and pre-ordered replenishments from the US while screwing down the lockdown on Gaza.

The true agenda is the ethnic cleansing of Gaza of Palestinians. The assault started in the north of Gaza and this northern third has been cut off into to a box shape and subjected to a rolling bombardment. This tactic was used in Vietnam to flush out entire sections of jungle of people. This tactic is called Rolling Thunder.

Operation Rolling Thunder;

en.wikipedia.org...

Eventually the bombardment of the northern sector will cease and the Palestinians will be allowed to leave the ruins to the south with the cycle commencing again. While subsequent bombardment may not be as intensive, the effects on the population will be the same and a cascade of movement will increase as the population gets driven to the Rafah border.

Egypt has already started building tent cities in its desert even though its border is still shut and there are no refugees on the border other than stuck travellers. They are still in the northern sector.

let's face it. these rockets are the atraps of the real stuff. homemade pipes with the anything cylinder attached on the top can harm only when hits directly in a head.

In 2006, Israel bombed Lebanon, resulting in almost 1200 civilian casualties . . 44 on Israeli side. Israel went to war over the kidnaping of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah . . people are still dying as a consequence of the cluster ammunition, Israel felt necessary to use . . the response was very disproportional and likely already planned to happen when the time would be right, in order to show the IDF's power to its enemies.

I believe the two soldiers were already dead. I think that was the public excuse. I think their real objective was to decimate - ruin - the very popular Hezbollah. Israel finally got back the bodies of the soldiers and their rough-shod US backed 34 days rampage only STRENGTHENED Hezbollah . . and I expect the US taxpayer paid the IDF bills.

The IDF greatly underestimated the capabilities of Hezbollah, which in terms of strength . . had modern anti-tank weapons as well as anti-ship missiles, which almost sank an Israeli corvette. Hezbollah has tripled and diversified its missile and rocket stock to over 40,000 and has been supplied with other weapons, such as anti-tank weapons and UAVs. The two bullies of the Middle East - America and Israel - have been bankrupt in their policies towards Muslims in general and Arabs in particular. Both know only war and killing to advance their ambitions. The Jewish lobby - AIPAC - has Congress scared to death. Instead of Washington being he puppet master it is the puppet to Jerusalem that is pulling our stings. It will be very hard for Obama to change American policy that was generally been constant it that regard since 1956 when Eisenhower ORDERED France, Britain and Israel OUT of Egypt. The last time we were in charge.

The objective of the Gaza operation was to stop the rocket attacks of Hamas. Hamas are believed to have approximately 1000 rockets remaining and are firing tens a day into Israel. Their tunnel network to smuggle weapons is believed to consist of hundreds of tunnels. Israel never considered these tunnels to be a threat. Now it is too late.

For those who don't know this military equipment, it is a system that destroys incoming rockets and mortar rounds in the air before they hit their ground targets.

On Counter-Ram. I was under the impression this was a weapons system that used radar and computers to “look back” at the incoming round’s trajectory and plot its point of origin, then to do counter-battery fire right onto the enemy’s launch site.

We used the Patriot anti-missile system in the First Gulf War to no good performance but it was great at public relations. It is very hard to hit an incoming missile and even harder to hit a mortar round. I’d say it is impossible or not worth the effort. Like SDI - the Bush43 name for Reagan’s Star Wars - both overpriced Pentagon boondoggles.
