VIP unit deletes SABC footage

Johannesburg - The SABC has retrieved some of the footage that was confiscated by the VIP protection unit over the weekend.

Footage showing one of the cars from President Kgalema Motlanthe's VIP protection unit on a tow truck, has however been erased.

Snuki Zikalala, the SABC's head of news, said on Thursday his journalists arrived on the scene shortly after the accident between Motlanthe's convoy and a red Golf on the N12, and filmed it.

SA president Kgalema Motlanthe's VIP protection unit was involved in a car accident and alleged shooting incident, and the footage taken by the SABC news crew had been confiscated (which goes against the constitution) and partially deleted.

Eyewitnesses say the driver of the other vehicle had got too close to the presidential convoy, and crashed into one of the convoy vehicles. One of the members of the protection unit then allegedly shot the driver in the arm. The police are now denying there were any shots fired.
