If you could live forever, would you want to?

<<  1    2  >>

If you had the chance to never die, stay alive, to live forever would you really want to. Now I'm not talking about everyone, I'm just talking about you! Would YOU really want to define age? As all your friends you grew up with die, you stay healthy, fit and alive?

What would you want?

As if you wouldnt want to be around for the end of time itself..... Imagine all the quality and fudged up things you could potentialy see

yeah it would suck seeing loved ones die and generations pass but i thinkin this case the end's would def just a means to be able to experience that....

Absolutely. I have always wanted immortality. I would spend my time learning as much as possible from all cultures of the world. I would learn multiple fighting styles. See all there is to see, watch as the world changes. I think it would be fantastic. I would however like some type of out if the prospect of living forever becomes to much at some point.

If there isn't any possible way of ending my life after becoming bored, I would probably attempt to overthrow governments and take my place as undisputed ruler of the world. That's just me however.

I don’t know, after watching hundreds of people that you care for die. Seems to me you would wind up callous. Besides you would run out of things to do to amuse your self. Living would just seem more like a chore. Than something worth enjoying. Isn’t that what makes life worth living, knowing that it will end so you live to the fullest while you are here. I would half to say I would have to pass up the chance.

You know, you couldnt have asked a bettter question that has an answer to it.

Your question is the answer.

Despite this I know your looking for a personal viewpoint and to a single life I would say no.

Of course I would. It's the only way I could grow all 4470+ tomato varieties listed by the SSE to find out which one I like best. Plus I'd be a perfect candidate for space travel!

I keep moving around. I think iit would hurt seeing my whole family die and if I had a partner, then that would hurt too, but as for all the friends: It's a fact of life: apart from very few => friends come and go.
My answer: definately YES!

Even on the subject of life extension , the thought of a ruling class of uber-wealthy 200 year olds waited on by a "lifer" underclass , makes me shudder at the thought.
The amount of wealth and power that could be consolidated over such a period would be threatening to those who could not afford the medical procedure.
An Immortal can be reckless , but i would imagine somebody using life extension technology would be adverse to risk, but i`m sure in that dystopian society there would be some poor person to take the risks for them.
Civilisation shuffles forward.

Edit to answer; No.

Of course. Family, friends, yup, I understand what you're saying, but that has to be balanced by the opportunities provided by immortality - especially since you specified 'healthy, fit' in the bargain as well. Heck, I might even settle for healthy and fit now if you're offering.

I have asked my self this question and on different days I have different answers. Some days I am so discouraged and so fed up with the condition of mankind on this planet that I can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel and I embrace the fact that this too will some day end. Then there are the days when I can see the possibility of a better world and would like to be around to see and be a part of that. I am realistic enough that that time is so far in the future that I would have to have the ability of an extended life to see it.

hmm.

it is a very hard question to answer and too little information to answer it,
would you be invincible as in could not be killed or only ageless??
would you have a way out in case of the first of the above?
would you even be allowed to live forever, at one point someone would notice in the society of today?
could you hibernate?

all in all it is a very complex question but in the scenario where one was but an ageless man i would say yes, one could always just commit suicide if it bothers you that much.
however if one could not die it would end up being torture.

In the process of writing a book (well---considering such as I have the first 4 chapters outlined of a total imagined 4 or 5 epic novels---plug plug).
I try to tackle this in both "skin" and "Necroi" life.
Both the natural born life, and a life that can be had for a price or reward once the organic life runs to a close, or by misfortune if you happen to have wealthy relatives.
Or by negotiation, if you take a medical procedure to prevent you from breeding permanently after the age of majority and have not reproduced previously.

(notice that this is published here first, and terms, especially "Necroi" are now defacto copyrighted.)

But, as for the original topic, Yes. With exceptions.
Given certain prerequisites. First and most important, IMHO, the right to self terminate existence after a certain waiting period.
I am postulating an existence of unlimited time---given resources to support such--and a sound mind to begin with.
This is postulating a life of un-numbered decades in an electronic virtual world free from pain, disease, struggle and strife. (Except for the struggle to make some contribution that pays for successive decades.)
Personally, would I like to live forever?
No.
There is a greater existence beyond methinks.
