US to head anti-pirate patrols off Somalia, Australian warship may join force

A US Navy commander is to lead a new international force to battle pirates off the coast of Somalia.

More than 20 nations are expected to take part in the mission once it is fully under way later this month.

Australian Defence head Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston has said Australia is considering being a part of the force.

I've got no love for the military. Any of them. Swords to plowshares...

However, while the ships are sailing the seas, they might as well be doing something useful. Protecting merchant ships seems to be a good thing.

I don't see why the pirates should hold the world to ransom and get away with it. Still, when they have as many problems as they do in their arse-backwards country (Somalia), you can see why they do it.

A bigger fix will be required for a permanent solution. At least we're seeing an effort to try and make the seas safer for civillians.
