An area of particular vulnerability is power grids. Ground currents induced during century-class storms can melt the huge, multi-ton transformers at the heart of power distribution systems. Here is a diagram of the seriousness of this situation. I'm not surprised that there is a huge Achilles' heel that our Nation must address. That is unless you have means to produce your own electricity

Maybe in the wake of this situation we will be forced to have localized power grids separated by major city regions. That way when NY goes down, for instance, the rest of the Great Lakes region doesn't get hit with a "black out". Heck maybe even the Government will start buying renewable energy sources like wind generators and solar panels in case a major black out does hit the country.
