After a week of increased violence, Iraq Interior Minister and head of security forces Nouri al-Badran has resigned his position.

The resignation comes at the request of Administrator Paul Bremer. He indicated that the move is to maintain a more equal balance between Shi'ite
and Sunni members in Iraqi's governing council, but some speculation is that it is a result of the recent escalation in insurgent violence.
