Are you sure you have the date right? This sounds like it could have been due to the Quadrantids, but they peaked the night before.

It could also have been a random meteor or small asteroid entering the atmosphere. There have been many reported recently, as well as mystery booms.

The blue-white light could also suggest a transformer blast, which would also be seen over a very wide area.
