Gunmen shoot policeman in Athens

news.bbc.co.uk

A Greek riot policeman has been seriously injured by two men with Kalashnikov automatic weapons in central Athens, officials say.

The officer was part of a unit guarding the culture ministry when the pre-dawn attack took place.

The policeman was taken to hospital and was undergoing surgery.

A huge manhunt is under way. Last month Greece saw its worst riots in decades after the fatal shooting by police of a teenager in Athens.

Police say 20 shots were fired by the attackers.

They say the 21-year-old officer spotted the gunmen and warned his colleagues shortly before he was hit by two bullets, one in the chest, the other in the leg.

A number of people have been taken in for questioning.

Well is this a "tit-for-tat" shooting?

Is this an attempt by hidden powers to continue the unrest in Athens and Greece?

And how many people could get their hands on Kalashnikov automatic weapons!

Just when things were calming down and other stories were heading up the "breaking news" on international websites.

When the heck is there going to be a story with some good news for a change with cease-fires, withdrawl of troops and resolve of civil unrest in places like Athens......never!

Is this the perfect excuse for Greek police to continue their actions but this time with a more personal attitude towards their "enemies"?

As usual, the motives behind stories like this stink to me, and what happens next will be very interesting.

Let's hope they catch these gunmen quickly (who are suspected to be responsible for earlier attacks in late December) and divorce them from the legitimate protesters....or are they not meant to be caught?

Peace.....nerb

Media can handle only one crises at the time... And thats a fact. What have we heard from Greece since Gaza op started? Not much... Before that riots was in every media outlets cover - And what I have understand, riots are still taking place over there.

Without blood - no news.
Without news - no win in causes...

Also I have wondered what would happen if Pak-India situation goes hot, witch front will be editors pick?

It's incredibly easy to get fully automatic AK-47's from Eastern Europe & The Middle East, both of which are neighboring Greece.

Particularly former Soviet countries all make their own line of AK-47 knock-offs. It should be incredibly easy to aquire them in Greece.

It's very easy to get SEMI-automatic in the USA.
Easier than getting a .22 handgun, by far.

Policemen are up there with paedophiles in my book for being scum, so you know my reaction to this.

No one in there right mind should care about police being injured or killed, they are worse than the worst paedophiles, pure scum.

Should we not care about retaliation towards members of the public though?

UPDATE/

Source: BBC website

Guns 'link several Greek attacks'
Greek police at the scene of the shooting of a Greek policeman, 5/1/2009
Anger at the police has soared since the shooting of a teenager

Weapons used to shoot a police unit in Greece overnight are linked to two previous attacks, including one by an anti-US militant group, police say.....

.....A group calling itself Popular Action claimed to be behind that attack.

More anti-U.S. groups.

That group operated for almost 30 years with apparent impunity, carrying out two dozen assassinations and countless bomb attacks against mainly foreign targets, says the BBC's Malcolm Brabant in Athens.

Greek police finally captured one of the group's members in 2002. It was disbanded soon afterwards.

Yeah, right!
