The deeper would make the rolling affect larger right?

Man! Any of you seeing how many BIG aftershocks are occurring after that 7.2 in Indonesia??? what in the heck is going on over there? This is starting to get a bit worrisome.
There's just too many, too soon. Is the sea floor coming apart or what? New volcano forming?

I came here to ask the EXACT same question. That's crazy and they're still happening - within the past 20 minutes a 6.3 (in Indonesia) Experts???

That's like 20 pretty good size quakes in 11 hours or so! In the same close area. And they keep coming! I know aftershocks are routine after a big quake of 7.2, but THIS MUCH THIS FAST? How can that be normal?

I missed one edit, but I think you get the point. I pulled out all others.

Is there some website to know how many earthquakes below 4.5 magnitude occurred in that zone? (USGS doesn't list world earthquake below 4.5)? It would be interesting to know.

The last big Yellowstone earthquake swarm was nothing in comparison to this.

Unfortunately it only lists relatively big events and only from the last 12 hours.
I was looking for a more complete database of world events.

Galeras Volcano in Colombia has erupted. Authorities have raised the alert level for this volcano to "red" after an "explosive eruption". Evacuation of about 8,000 has begun and "large amount of ash" is falling on the city of Pasto.

First eruption since January 2008 for this volcano

yes, bit odd - but this is still "normal" for this region. I remember last year - a very similar situation. However, if the quakes over 6 would go that frequent then I would be seriously worried. Just not yet..

Yea it was the Loyalty Islands where there was clusters last year. It still is a bit unusual for so many medium size quakes to be so concentrated but it has happened before.

Good graphic from the USGS site.

wow, it is great you still have that screen-print. I remember this one indeed. I remember it was something like 22 earthquakes over 4 within the first 12 hours .
Going back to our times - it looks like the Indonesia qukes are calming down now . The last few weeks were unussualy calm. I still hope to find a connection between Solar sun-spot activity and earthquakes, but I never had the time to find the data and make the programs to compare the strings.. i will do it one day for curiosity !

They just had a quake in Mount St. Helen's, Washington. It was a 2.9 mag. I hope that is not a precursor to something else.

Yea a 7.3 mag in the Kermadec Islands region. I'm not sure where that is but I hope it's not in the water.

Indonesia certainly looks to be building to something again.

not good.

Infact as well the Supervolcano there is much more likely to blow than any others in the world.

kermadecs are about 800 km's north of auckland, New Zealand.

think there was a 7.5 there a year or 3 ago and it shook all the way to christchurch, which is in new zealands south island!!

activity is heaving from indonesia to new zealand at the moment .

(by the way - they reckon new zealand is long overdue for a 7+ quake)

not had one since the 30's
