If you look on Google Earth it really is not far off the coast for most of these.

Yep, I just wish we had more stations in GEE close enough by that were available. I've checked every single network, and as far as broadband channels go, I can only get one near the north side of NZ. There is one channel very close to the epicenters of these on the southside, but it is grayed out, like almost all the others. That one thing in GEE continually frustrates me. I can't get anything at all real close to Redoubt either. I've tried all channels too, same thing. Not available to common folk.

For Redoubt select the AV network (from "add network" in "station chooser"), then EHZ channel for the following stations: RSO, REF, RDN, NCT, DFR, RDT!
Remember, you have to select channels from "All Channels".

And by the way...

Foreshocks, Mainshocks & Aftershocks
Foreshocks are relatively smaller earthquakes that precede the largest earthquake in a series, which is termed the mainshock. Not all mainshocks have foreshocks. Aftershocks are earthquakes that follow the largest shock of an earthquake sequence. They are smaller than the mainshock and within 1-2 fault lengths distance from the mainshock fault. Aftershocks can continue over a period of weeks, months, or years. In general, the larger the mainshock, the larger and more numerous the aftershocks, and the longer they will continue.

Yep, I think this is the one I captured a screenshot of in GEE. I started a GEE screenshots thread here:

www.abovetopsecret.com...

And I uploaded that shot of the 6.0. Just barely managed to catch it before it disappeared, and it is pushing nearly 500 microns/sec from around 200 miles away.

And oh, thanks puterman, just saw that!

You are right about the recent increase in stronger quakes. I get txt message notifications for earthquakes over magnitude 6.0 and for most of the summer my phone has been silent until this past month where I usually get a few messages a day. The 6.1 off the coast of Norway I woke to this AM for example.

I'm not sure what to make of it. The Earth does have 'more active' and 'less active' periods of earthquakes and maybe this is just a 'more active' period? I think in order to get a good grasp on whether or not this is unusual, one would have to get a list of all earthquakes greater than magnitude 6 for the past several years and then see if the increase in activity now is significant or not.

If I have a chance later, I will do such an analysis.
