Oh i do agree that 2 that size in one day is a bit odd and one to watch for sure, Yuo do have to wonder if a volcano has been awoken a bit too,

But to keep in mind that Pacific "Ring of Fire" and is prone to seismic activity and might rock quite a bit for the next few days all around those areas, So it may look like alot is going on,

I am not familiar with that part of the world. Could you let me know what volcanos are around that area? Isn't Kratoa sp.. in that area? Wasn't that the last "super eruption" in the last 100 years?

seems that there is some conflicting data? USGS and most of the news agencies only report two quakes.. where is your info from?

Lots of volcanoes but according to the experts, none are near enough to be involved.

Interesting, all of these 18 EQs so far (with 4 higher than 7.4) have been within 1 hour of each other with the majority being within 10 - 20 minutes of each other.

I thought I put it in my first list but I had no source... RSOE-EDIS website

Also, a scrubbed list that I put together is a few posts back...

just did a google search of Krakota, some interesting information. I believe it is in the same area

Over a century ago, on August 26,1883, the island volcano of Krakatau ("Krakatoa") in Indonesia, a virtually unknown volcanic island with a history of violent volcanic activity, exploded with devastating fury. The eruption was one of the most catastrophic natural disasters in recorded history. The effects were experienced on a global scale. Fine ashes from the eruption were carried by upper level winds as far away as New York City. The explosion was heard more than 3000 miles away. Volcanic dust blew into the upper atmosphere affecting incoming solar radiation and the earth's weather for several years.

A series of large tsunami waves generated by the main explosion, some reaching a height of nearly 40 meters (more than 120 feet) above sea level, killed more than 36,000 people in the coastal towns and villages along the Sunda Strait on Java and Sumatra islands. Tsunami waves were recorded or observed throughout the Indian Ocean, the Pacific Ocean, the American West Coast, South America, and even as far away as the English Channel.

would there be / are there any signs which might indicate more and/or bigger quakes to come?

With the 2 Quakes it could be something called a *Cluster* basicly where the stress is on the earth crust,

Big earthquakes are not evenly spread. Between 1929 and 1934 New Zealand was hit by five major earthquakes of magnitude 7 or more. This is 10 times greater than the long-term average for earthquakes of magnitude 7. There is evidence to suggest that big earthquakes can accelerate or retard the arrival of another earthquake. It is thought they do this by shifting the balance of stresses in the Earth’s crust.

Also to answer a question about how long will aftershocks last... when there are large ones there can be oer 60 aftershocks over a number of days, There can also be small shocks for years after in some cases,

I'm really not sure but just from observation when i have seen large ones hit this area its not to long before another on that ring is hit with a bit one,

oddly this time of year seems to be a hot bed for quakes, Not sure why that is..

yea sorry but i really don't think RSOE's info is too reliable in this case.. there is no other report anywhere else of there being four 7+ quakes. i think if there were four quakes in such a short time there would be SERIOUS trouble?!

would two big quakes in a row like this not create a big possibility of a really big quake occurring soon after? ie. they would have really unsettled the area?

Yeah? Why do you say they're not reliable? Just cause if they were then the Indonesians would be in alot of trouble? Sorry, doesn't make sense to me.
