Oregon looks at taxing mileage instead of gasoline
news.yahoo.com
Oregon is among a growing number of states exploring ways to tax drivers based on the number of miles they drive instead of how much gas they
use, even going so far as to install GPS monitoring devices in 300 vehicles. (visit the link for the full news article)

What a nice way to monitor everyone's movements under the guise of a mileage tax. Not that they have not already done so via other means but this is
in your face tracking. Should Oregon go ahead with this, you can bet your bottom dollar the rest will jump on the band wagon.

Personally I view milage tax probably one of the worst crimes against the American way of life. America has always been on the move. It is one of
the few places on Earth if not the only place on Earth where you can move 100 miles away in the same country and live in an area with a totally
different culture and way of living then where you came from. I myself have been very lucky to have lived all over the US. I find it quite
disgusting that anyone would tax our mileage. Not only that but America is so huge with so much to see in it, I think everyone should see as much of
it as possible.
A mileage tax means that you will have to pay the government to leave your house, unless your lucky and live close to work, places to eat, places to
buy food and have entertainment within walking distance.
Not only that, but it will only stagnate an already stumbling push for a green energy revolution in America. Something that should have been started
long ago.
Mileage tax is something only a sick, anti-American, selfish, greedy mind could come up with.
I hope there is no confusion as to how I feel about it.

This is just such a no starter in my mind. Afew points:
1) Unless the government felt they could actually increase taxes by this scheme they wouldn't come near it,
2) The price of everything from food to consumer goods to cars would go up because they are shipped over long distances, and
3) Yes, they would have to have the ability to monitor everybodys movement so major freedoms would be lost.

A mileage tax means that you will have to pay the government to leave your house
The ultimate control on movement would then be to link the system with one that was used in the movie Minority Report. Track people even using public
transportation and tax that. Shouldn't give them any ideas .
I agree that this would literally kill the green movement as there would then be no incentive to save the resources. Instead of a win/win you end up
with a total loss to the public but total gain by the gov. Don't you know that they would call it 'tax evasion' if you removed it and make it a
felony. Instead of where's your papers, its where's your GPS citizen?

Plan on kidnapping someone or stealing a car?
Why do care if the government knows where you are? They already know where you live and where you work.
If they want to find you, it's not entirely difficult even without monitoring.

Not at all, and never even crosses my mind. Plus it is rather hard to track me even if they wanted to anyway.

We are talking Oregon are we not? The home of the last hippies. This state is so liberal they make Kennedy look like Rush L.
So I think this would be the last state to use this for anything other than getting your money. This state is broke due to some really bad decisions
in the recent past, so they are trying to be more like CA and dream up new ways to tax you for their mistakes.

I could think of many ways to screw a system based on GPS reading from a car GPS unit.
I could see someone challenging the states mileage reading by claiming the system does not work.
I would take the GPS unit from the car and plug it into a portable power supply and fly it around at 150+ mph, take it out on boats 10+ miles off the
coast,
take it on hiking trip where a car could not go.
then when i got my tax bill ask for a record of where the car had been.
or i would take a GPS unit from a wreak and plug it into my car for long trips and just use the one they are tracking for short trips to the store.
I could also see the prices of gas go up because people from surrounding states coming to Oregon to fuel there cars with tax free gas.

I seriously doubt that, and you should too.

When I heard that on the local news here, I bout @#@# my pants!! Oh my, here it comes . But I don't believe that our state reps or congress in
this state will alllow it. I know a lot of people are against a sales tax, but it would do wonders for this state. Put a clause in it that wouldn't
be allowed to go over .05%, it is suppose to be coming up for vote in 2010. But we'll see. This is totally stupid! We already have high gas,
property and cig taxes here!! The tax (per pack) of cigs here is over $2.00! What the hell are they doing with it? Property tax is totally way to
high. Just say no!!
All of you from Oregon, lets million email our reps and the governers office, that it is totally an infringement of our constitutional rights of
"Privacy"! They say, "oh, it's only to track your mileage", bull@#@##!

Or just go to the Oregon.gov wesite and email all of them. Including the Gov!

Well kind of tax free...there is a law here that you can not pump your own gas, so a gas attendant is needed at every pump. The price of gas here is
the same as CA where they tax the crap out of it.

This system sounds like a great way to increase tax on the poor. Instead of having those Hummer drivers pay the highest tax, you have a system where
Honda Civic owners and Hummer owners pay the exact same tax whereas before the Hummer owner's tax was at least two times higher!

Not a ninja type but as for any trackable items, none to speak of. However, if they really wanted to find me, the closest they could get is the city.
Beyond that, good luck. Shortly, you wont even have a city to try in.
