lol, thank you....perhaps I could get you to try to convince my mother-in-law of that.
As for Weishaupt, he had a beef with the so-called "Modern Grand Lodge of England", which were in opposition with the so-called "Antient Grand
Lodge." Weishaupt wanted continental Masonry to rally around the Illuminati and demand political reform in Germany. The Modern Masons in England
brushed it off, saying that Masonry was not a political order, and such things were outside Masonic jurisprudence. Weishaupt responded that the
English Masons were hypocrites because they lived in a free country and enjoyed civil rights, while the German Masons were being oppressed. The
English Masons responded that the Illuminati weren't "real" Masons anyway, and that they had simply ripped off Masonic rituals and traditions. And
this bickering back and forth went on and on.
Weishaupt was more friendly to the Antient Grand Lodge of England, who at least publicly called for free elections throughout Europe, even though they
didn't actually do anything about it. Weishaupt did not live to see the merger between these two Grand Lodges, resulting in the present United Grand
Lodge of England.
BTW, I'm not English, I live in the southern US.
