The 30 Chinese crew of M/V Zhenhua 4 -- off the Somali Coast -- locked themselves in their accommodation area - which includes their sleeping rooms, mess rooms and recreation area - to prevent the bandits from entering the ship itself. The ship's captain, Peng Weiyuan, said the crew used 'water cannon, self-made incendiary bombs, beer bottles and other missiles to fight the pirates' during the five-hour stand-off.

Looks like this Chinese merchant ship has there own method of dealing with the Somali pirates.

A few Molotov cocktails would make for a hot time for the pirates.

Maybe the Chinese government should give this crew a even better selection of goodies to fight back with like a few RPGs and grenades.

Probably the first time the pirates had to work for a living.

Anyway, it always makes me wonder why those huge tankers, containing millions($,€ whatever) of cargo, don't have some automatic weapons on board to secure the load and people operating it.

Probably because the crews life is worth more than the ships cargo.

If the merchant ships open fire on the pirates, then the pirates in turn will have to kill the crew to take the cargo.

If the crew stands down, the likelihood of their survival increases dramatically.

The pirates aren't in this to kill people, they're in it to make money. Dead hostages are no good to them... but the cargo is also worth allot to them, and they will settle for only a material ransom, whether the crew is alive to be bargained for or not.


Essentially, if you arm the merchants, you'll just end up with dead merchants, dead pirates, and the cargo and ship still wind up in the hands of the pirates.

I know it's easy for Americans to jump directly to the whole "they have the right to defend themselves"... but all you're doing here is getting them killed instead.

I'm not American.
Just saying that having a totally defenseless cargoship sailing the seas seems odd.
