Also there was a large volcanic eruption about 1257-1260 CE that traumatized the populace at the time. It has bee thought that it was this event and not any such as a bubonic plague that decimated the population.

I believe this movie is part of a 2012 fear campagne, with the intention of steering the coming change, wich is potentially very positive, into an even more negative situation.
