I agree with Arpaio's methods of punishment. I feel we need more jailers like him when it comes down to punishing the worst offenders.

However what I don't agree with is the reasons people are in jail in the first place. A lot of people are in jail for things like drug convictions.

And in some instances; the war on drugs is a joke.

What are YOUR thoughts?

GO JOE!

His policies and steadfast resolve of treating criminals like criminals is an inspiration. People shouldnt think of jail as a free vacation resort, it should be harsh and give them a reason not to commit major crimes again.

I have to disagree that drug charges dont rank. If you buy, sell, or consume drugs deemed illegal by the government, then you should be punished for the crime. If you end up in Joe's place, then maybe you will think twice before that next trip as a buyer or dealer. He is fighting an actual war on drugs, just as he is fighting the war on all crime by making the consequences absolutely undesirable.

Again I say...

Don't do the crime if you can't do the time.

I did 10 days in the county jail for a trafic conviction that was enough for me not to go back. The food was horrible I wouldn't eat it. The only thing I would eat were the oatmeal cookies and I only got 1 a day.

But yeah why not make them pay for food. If they have to earn money to eat it keeps them busy.

I actually think they should pay for meals AND rent! And be made to work 8hrs a day.

And regarding the drug convictions......drugs = against the law. That is why people are in jail on drug convictions.

Whether or not I feel drugs should be against the law is actually irrelevant. *shrug*

I think they should pay for their food also. Unfortunately, most of them are probably indigent. And while this get tough sheriff action is applauded by many, one has to question whether his actions cost the county more than it is worth.

Vermin, filth, medical care suggestive of POW camps, chronic mismanagement, the wanton destruction of records, and a steady parade of corpses in Maricopa County jails have cost taxpayers an astonishing — and until now, undisclosed — 41.4 million dollars.

The Boyle County, Kentucky jail charges inmates 35 dollars per day for their stay. Crime definitely does not pay in that county. Some inmates, who fit the criteria, can opt for home incarceration, wearing an ankle bracelet and it costs only, heh, 25 dollars a day. What happens when you get behind in payments to the jail after release? You go back to jail and run up a bigger tab. Lucky inmates who are trustworthy can work during the day at one of three county dumps, unloading residents' trash and pay for their stay. This has kept the jail population from the county lower than it was, leaving more beds for surrounding counties to pay the BC jail to house their criminals.

For work, they should teach and force inmates to quilt or knit so they can make blankets for all the homeless people. That will keep them busy and provide for those in need.

But sitting in a cell watching TV and looking at porn, well that just doesnt cut it for me a tax payer.

Joe Arparo has saved Maricopa county millions of dollars. He now has taken over the animal shelter and has inmates learning to care for the animals the county must take in. They have taken a budget that was like 3 million and reduced it to a paying concern rather than one that costs the tax payers. If you work at the jail to raise your own food, either in the hog farm or the vegtable and fruit gardens you get payed and eat better. If you don't them you eat peanut butter and balogna sandwiches three times a day. I also love that he makes the inmates wear PINK underwear and suits. You stick out like a sore thumb!

I was waiting for more replies to come in before I put any more elaboration into my statement about drugs.

For instance I am for the legalization of marijuana (and only marijuana). I'm not a pot-smoker but my reason for legalization is to reduce crime. That will free up the jails. Combine that with Arpaio's policy in corrections and you're good to go.

I said it before and I will say it again. We need more people like Arpaio working in our jails.

Man you are ridiculous. There are people in jail also that just shouldn't be there. I have a friend who did 6 months because he didn't give his ex wife enough child support. He lost his job, and fed and clothed that baby still - she didn't do anything but sit around demanding her child support so she could go shopping.

There are people in there for stupid crimes man, like weed and playing poker? Give me a break, I don't even smoke but if someone wants to that's their right, and the government has no right to demand what people do and what to spend there money on as long as it doesn't effect other people.

Not everyone in there are rapists, thieves or murders.

This is the point I was trying to make in my mention of drug convictions. Particularly when it comes to a drug such as marijuana. (now coke, meth, pcp, forget about this i want those to stay illegal)

I would say YO JOE!!!

On a more serious note, I hope every state looks at these policies. One that really needs to be examined is prison labor, which could help out in these tough economic times. At my unit we actually have prison labor clean our buildings and do landscaping. It saves our state and the unit quite a bit of money by using them for various tasks, plus the prisoners really enjoy getting out in the real world. It helps rehabilitate them and gives something respectful to do that they can be proud of.

Not to cause an argument, but I don't agree with making prisoners pay for food.

People are in jail AGAINST their free will. It is the responsibility of the jailers to feed and clothe them.

Similarly, no one should be forced to work in a jail. They are there against their free will, so they have the right to do nothing. If so, then they can expect the basic needs without any frills.

However, I think that they should only be able to enjoy (wrong word?) luxuries IF they work. Kind of like a reward for effort scheme.

Lets go back to the point of feeding them twice a day.

Most of you saying this is a good thing have no clue about the inside of jails or our system.

I can tell you I served 6 months once because an acquaintance brought cocaine onto my property and called 911 and hung up because he had no place to stay and he knew that would get him housing.

Well I ended up getting arrested too and because the charge happened on my property I was convicted.

And I am happy to report that this SOB is now serving life for other stupid stuff but the fact remains I had to serve time for a crime I did not commit.

That said I got three meals a day.

That is breakfast , lunch and dinner.

That was in population. In holding I got three bologna sandwiches a day an orange and milk. But, still it was three meals a day.

These folks are only getting two meals a day.

Some of them will be PROVEN INNOCENT unlike my case.

Innocent until proven guilty or have you forgotten?

Is the value of their lives so low to you just because this sheriff (Who has tried to implement other unconstitutional actions) arrests whoever he feels like it?

Do you really think they should be fed two meals a day and be charged for it?

I know that at least some of you do and to that I can only pray that you receive what you give that you may enjoy understanding.

I think they should pay with hard labour for rent and food, would be better punishment couple that with a far better rehabilitation course than is available now,and more after care services when they do leave jail.

I like the idea of making inmates pay for food. For crying out loud, there are people on food stamps while the rest of us work hard to put food on the table. However, I do wonder about those mentally incapacitated to work and how they will get fed.

Again some of these folks are innocent. Some have cases like mine but they can afford lawyers where as I could not. Being arrested does not equate to guilt. This is not a Napoleonic society. Some of these people are awaiting trial for crimes they did not commit.

They get feed poorly twice a day and no medical treatment. And now if they can not afford to pay for their slop they will have to serve time longer.

This is punishing people for the sake of punishment. This is vile.

I would think people not mentally or physically fit enough to work wouldnt need to..i dont think they would starve them,or atleast i hope not.Course people could run rings round that law,but i mean really handicapped in one of those areas.

And titorite,i dont agree with people who have not been commited for a crime to be included in this...well i dont anyway. And to say *some* people *might* be innocent is just grasping at straws, thats your justice systems fault not the prison service.Different story entirely.

I think the only way to find out if people get special treatment under the circumstances mentioned above whether you know for certain that you were innocent despite being convicted or if you're mentally handicapped or whatever the situation may be. I think the best way of finding that out is to ask Arpaio himself or an associate of his.
