or: What Makes Your Day OK?

It's come to my attention that we may all be in for some personal budget cuts in the near future - if not immediately

I tried to keep my head in the sand as long as I could :-)

I decided to take a look at where I was spending my money - and where I could spend less - and started to really wonder...

What are those things that make my day OK - normal - comfortable?

What simple things make us feel content - even while doing without many of the things we've come to take for granted?

There are many people in this world that are going without in a very big way - and many who have been without for quite a while before the current economic situation hit the fan

So, in my own life - regardless what may come next - I consider myself to be fortunate - and I'm thankful for what I have

While I was thinking about it - it made me realize that it really is the simple things in life that matter

I hope everyone reading this weathers the storm - and lands on their feet

My real hope is that the storm ends up being nothing much - and not much to weather

Ever the optimist - or, maybe just not that bright

There are more than enough doom and gloom threads on this subject, so - on a lighter note:

After basic food and shelter - what are those little, everyday things that make your world OK? The things you would keep on your list regardless?

it could be anything - we all have our own special little needs - movies, books, chocolate, beer - the soft toilette paper...

I'll start: coffee

and, it doesn't even have to be fancy coffee - or coffee house coffee - freeze dried crystals will do

:-)

this is one of those things I really like to know about people anyway - even without the added financial fiasco

but, I know it may come down to it, so, really started me thinking

I like to hear people talk about those basic things that actually make them happy

good company/conversation - yes - definitely

comfort foods - it's good I like potatoes :-)

not first on my list -

but, I could see how it might get bumped up pretty quick

I've always wondered why people buy the cheap toilet paper when it is relatively inexpensive..
Russian toilet paper was like cardboard.

When in the forest though find the biggest and softest leaf....

I don't conserve it either..
abundance is nice.

it's why this is so interesting - where people decide to save - or not

I know someone who is sitting in a dark house at night to save money on electricity - but, insists on buying food for the neighborhood squirrels

bless her heart

we figured it out - she's saving about 50 cents a day on electricity

she's spending about 50 cents a day on the squirrels

I would do that. I love the dark and squirrels. I feed my chipmunks, because they entertain me on my deck. Pay back.

I can understand feeding the squirrels too. It's costing me quite a bit to feed the birds in our garden but I couldn't see them go hungry.

Often we get a squirrel coming along to steal the nuts and they can eat quite a lot.

We're feeding a small family of rats too, there's not much food getting wasted at our house.

For myself, I think tea and tissues are indispensable.

And now I've got used to having the internet at home (I used to have it at work) I wouldn't like to give it up.

man!

how could I have forgotten about the internet?

I'd almost give up food first

almost

as for feeding the critters - I agree

better to sit in the dark :-)

For me it's been 'heat'. And 'lights'.

And I've just weaned them both.

I hardly watch television --yet I wonder if I could or would really let it go completely, the answer: yes, sure, there is the internet. Cable: buh bye.

The last week I made a pact with my roomie cutting the light usage more than in half and leaving the heat off completely. Give and take. I was rewarded with a second faux blanket found some superwarm night wear and haven't even noticed the change.

My biggest creature comfort is sound, however. If it were to disappear as in radios, background noise, ect I'd be a different person.

Books.
Books.
Need my books.
Did 500 miles on the Appalachian Trail in 06. The one thing I missed was my books. The rest I got used to doing without.

Sweet iced tea is very special for me. I drink it all day long.

Next would be my bed. I don't spend much time sleeping but when I do I want to feel very cozy and comfortable. Also would want to have my three special pillows.

Lastly, books are very important in my life. I usually have 3 or 4 I'm reading at the same time. They usually consist of a couple of cook books, ( i cook a lot), something sci fi, a religious study book and an adventure book.

would have to keep heat - hope you're somewhere where going without is doable

I agree - goodbye cable

these are the things I'm talking about - the things you'd end up with if they took everything else away

coffee (for me) - books, music

and heat

I like to wear clothes here in the Mile high Rockies. It's icy outside currently and only the stout and hearty go outside nekked on a day like today.

For today my polar fleece underwear, Tshirt that says "Santa Ana Casino" my down ski jacket, cowboy hat and Levi's are non-negotiable.

oh yeah, my Tony Lama snakeskin cowboy boots.

I'm not a cowboy. Sometime I like to dress up like a Pirate too.

Ah this made me smile...! My little creature comforts would include.....

Loo paper....of course, and shower gel.

Toothpaste...my favourite vegan kind.

Moisturiser...can't have wrinkles *ever*

Bean, rice, tomatoes, coconut milk in the cupboard.

Lady Grey tea.....yum!

The Internet...

And stationery...notebooks, drawing paper, pencils, pens, rulers...all the stuff....it's a genetic obsession that I've inherited...I love paper!

I could happily get snowed in if I have all of this to occupy me. I'm hoping I do in January!

Oh man, you guys are better than me. I'm going to have to go with beer, red bull, cigarettes, my new Jeep, the dogs, and the laptop (internet included). I should probably cut back on the first three, but I like 'em!

I think we can all agree on the toilet paper. Wiping with a leaf sucks.
