About the shoe bombing angle, well I guess the reason he didn't use a shoe bomb is because #1 he's a journalist not a terrorist, well, he's a terrorist now i guess!

And #2, those shoe bombs are rubbish. They would have noticed him take his shoe off, open the secret compartment, set fire to his shoe, and then chuck it.
