I was recently mocked mercilessly for the limited movies I have seen by my girlfriend. I was hoping members could give me some good suggestions. Apparently, I am lame for not having seen Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and a few others. I was hoping you could give some answers to the following genres...

I realize this has already been asked, just hoping for a fresh perspective or two.

1.) All time favorite
2.) Comedy
3.) Action
4.) Drama
5.) Documentary
6.) Anything else a 23 year old should see...
7.) Foreign, don't mind the subtitles at all

Help me! I don't care if you only have one or two suggestions, I have not seen a good movie in a long time and just bought a a HUGE TV. Do not assume I have seen the movies you suggest, I have been to busy from 18 till now to see much of anything. Thanks guys and gals, I appreciate it!

If you like the Life Aquatic, you would really enjoy the Darjeeling Limited. Same feel, same director. It actually really made me want to go to India.

Nice, I get made fun of for liking the life aquatic by people that consider themselves 'deep'. I'll have to rent the movies you recommended out of spite!

I'm curious.... what do "deep" people enjoy? I would think that the humor in the Life Aquatic would be a bit more "high brow" than most comedies. Then again, I am not a self proclaimed "deep" person.

Ahhh thank you my friend. I just watched the Happening and liked it a lot. It seemed a little slow at times, but I sort of got lost in it. I suppose I do this a little to frequently in books and movies, but at least I get what I pay for! Thanks for the suggestions! I'll look to rent them all.

Watch the Classics by.....

Orson Wells
Otto Preminger
Alfred Hitchcock
john Ford
Fritz Lang......M
Stanley Kubrick
Ed Wood

And you will be the one mocking your GF.

And to be a super mocker.....

Bicycle thieves...De Sica
Battleship Potemkin...Eisenstien
Seven Samuri....Kurosawa
Seventh Seal....I. Bergman

These films/directors wrote all the film licks ages ago. Almost everything else after these classics is just entertainment.

And thanks for allowing me a shameless plug.
I had a small part in this one; Frank Miller is a genius

Just in time for Xmas.

I think what we are all stating here is you don't have to be stuck watching teen vampire films, mindless remakes, and every superhero film (although the superhero genre is very well made nowadays). Go to the foreign film selection or the classic sections and you can find many of the classic films. When you watch Casablanca for the first time, it will feel as if you have seen it a dozen times as there are more quoted lines from this movie than any other I can think of.

I also think the movies of the late sixties to the late seventies were a mini golden age. Taxi Driver, The Godfather Part 1 and 2, 2001 a Space Odyssey are but a few from that era. The classics by the directors named by whaaa are not to be missed.

For your girlfriend, there are many women actors from the 1930s to the 1950s. They were not little girls like the ones out now, but strong and independent women. Greta Garbo, Claudette Colbert, and many others to numerous to mention. She will look at the profession very differently after watching those strong women.
