The idea of using various available energies, especially radiation would than be used for fuel and propulsion. It wouldn't need to be just as a deflector.

There was a documentary program on Discovery channel about a year ago discussing plasma energies being used to generate shields and barriers for spacecraft launchbays and glass-less windows, like those seen in ST and SW.

So...more science fiction turning into reality. So much for the skeptic viewpoint of 'thats impossible'.
