The tone of this post makes me give up. The slogan of ATS is "deny ignorance." The sig of the person who posted this is "Don't be a sheeple."
And yet, even the poster commits a classic
non sequitur.
If people are going to hold this jackass up as a folk hero because he took a stand the day before the hammer fell on him, I give up. Live in fear and
ignorance, everyone. It's what "they" want. If this makes you fear B of A, you'll ignore that Blago was selling a Senatorial seat. Not just a
senator taking money this time, but people like Jesse Jackson Jr. offering $500k-$1m USD for a public office.
I'll give some folks a
little slack if they're not from Illinois, and haven't been following the ongoing Blago saga. But for you to make an
argument based on that is another logical fallacy:
argumentum ad ignorantiam, or argument from ignorance. It's of the same class as, but a
little more complicated than, "I don't believe that evolution is real, therefore it's not real." More like: "I don't know anything about
Blagojevich's past record, but I do know he was arrested a day after he said Illinois would never do business with Bank of America, therefore he was
arrested for standing up to the Bank of America."
Argumentum ad ignorantiam is an argument based on IGNORANCE!
DENY IGNORANCE!!! At the very least, look at his budget cuts; they're
almost always in districts of representatives he doesn't like. Since I work in the newspaper business, it really burned my hash that he attempted to
get the members of the Chicago Tribune staff who were openly critical of him fired.
Google is your friend. Even Illinois Democrats scratch their heads over his methods and motives.
I mean, the guy tried getting campaign funds in exchange for the state fulfilling its financial obligations. He tried to stiff a children's hospital
that way. The TV show
Prison Break was filmed in the Joliet prison, which was vacant because he attempted to balance the budget by shutting
down state parks and shutting down prisons--including one which wasn't even constructed yet--but despite that, and despite a lack of funding to cover
Medicaid expenses and even cover the State Police's gasoline vouchers(!) he was going to raise taxes for a universal healthcare plan. He can't pay
his current state employees, is cutting employees left and right, but he's going to take a stand against B of A because they won't extend credit to
some Chicago factory so they can make payroll?
Any Libertarians wish to comment on this? Here you have a State government official threaten to use the state's business ties to force a bank to
lend more money to a debt-ridden company that will likely shut down next month. Where are the people righteously indignant against government
introducing inefficiency through government intervention?
And is no one aware of the political tool known as an empty threat? He issues 'em all the time.
A folk hero he isn't. An asshole, maybe, but not a folk hero. He's damn lucky it was the Feds and not a lynch mob. His approval rating is about
half that of Bush's.
Details from Rod Blagojevich's 74-page affadavit
Having said that, I've been waiting for the Blago/Rezko thing to blow up in Obama's face. I'm only surprised it didn't happen during the
election.
