Pakistan Targets Suspected Mumbai Attackers

SLAMABAD, Pakistan (Map, News) - Pakistani troops seized a camp used by the extremist group blamed in the Mumbai attacks and arrested more than 12 people, militants and a security official said Monday.

The raid was the first known action by Islamabad in response to the attacks, which have sharply raised tensions between nuclear-armed rivals Pakistan and India and raised concerns in Washington over its campaign against al-Qaida in the region.

India says the Mumbai siege was carried out and plotted by Pakistani militants belonging to the banned Laskhar-e-Taiba. It and the United States are demanding Pakistan crack down on the perpetrators.

Troops briefly exchanged fire with people at the camp during Sunday's raid close to the town of Muzaffarabad in the Pakistani part of the disputed Kashmir region, the militants said.

It looks like Pakistan is serious about controlling the violence within its own borders. There doesn't seem to be any doubt that terrorists in and around Kashmir are responsible for the attacks in Mumbai.

Possibly Pakistan is doing this to show India (and the U.S.) its good faith and de-escalate what could possibly be a nuclear war between the two countries.

As an American, I am relieved. War between them would almost certainly draw us in as India's allies but lose Pakistan as a partner in eradicating Al Quida. It could also involve the whole middle east and Israel, and quite possibly begin another world war.

Can Pakistan really be trusted and not just making gestures of cooperation to distract from what they are really doing, which is as much damage to India and the western world as they possibly can get away with?
