Dig unearths Stone Age sculptures
news.bbc.co.uk
he site at Zaraysk, 150km south-east of Moscow, has yielded figurines and carvings on mammoth tusks.
The finds also included a cone-shaped object whose function, the authors report in the journal Antiquity, "remains a puzzle".
Such artistic artifacts have been found in the nearby regions of Kostenki and Avdeevo, but this is the first such discovery at Zaraysk. (visit

why the pointy faces? and whats the mysterious device , put a pole through that and could it be used to grind flour? or berries ? foliage?
the pointy faces could be a knot in the wood unable to produce a human shaped head , or the human might not have had the skill..
The thing that makes me think is both heads are the same , strangely polished.. it seems much attention was lavished on this part of the sculpture
.. so again why the pointy face?

Per your link, they are not carved out of wood but mammoth tusks and bones. Not that that would explain your question about the 'shininess' of the
head... I think there is a lot to ponder here, and wonder what the "densely ornamented" cone is ornamented with.
The description and picture of the cone are both particularly obscure... makes me wonder why?

The cone shaped object, to be honest, looks like a top to a primitive butter churn-type set up. My mother had one at our house for years, and I know
the shape well. Could be placed on top of a rock carved into a bowl, or a tree stump with the same shape, and slide a stick into it to churn it
away.
Probably be well off base with that, but would not be at all suprised if it's not too far off.
in the article I saw another interesting thing...
Each of the figurines had been covered with the shoulder-blade of a mammoth.
Wonder about the significance of that. These people seemed to really worship the mammoths, which COULD be an answer to why the pointed faces on the
carvings.
Without being able to totally carve out a trunk appendage on a figure like that, the pointed face feature would be an approximation of it.
Yea.. that feels pretty right. That would also explain why they appear to be pregnant. Anthropomorphizing the mammoths into human figures, pregnant,
as a type of fertility icon.
I wonder if the time period of these relics comes from a time when the mammoths were dying off, and this was a way for them to try to bring them back.

Very cool find!
I wish there were more pics.
I looked and found a little bit more on the site at the link below.
Zaraysk Dig
For the bone fragment with the "cross hatch" on it. It looks like every marking on it is just a little different. Early form of counting or
writing?
As for the odd fragment. I'll admit I'm not 100% sure what it is. But, if you were to insert a nice sturdy, straight bit of wood through that hole
in the center you would have a very nice mace / club type weapon for either ceromonial or practical use.

The shape of the skull might actually be close to what they looked like with the skull and flat face and possibly a protruding lower jaw or underbite,
possibly even from the loss of teeth? The detail might be enhanced if they used more advanced scanning equipment. My guess is it's holding a basket
or similar. Concluding that it's a reptillian seems far fetched but possible here on this site. Maybe it was a gift by a visitor to these people
also.

oh ive always like that kind of stuff. I am a big art fan. But something about prehistoric figures and statues just seems extra neat to me.
Nice find!
I wonder what the cone shaped objects are used for. So interesting.

The round disk like object represents some UFO to me. It is quite possible that aliens were visiting us since Stone Age

The cone shaped artifact reminds me very much like a the axle stops from chariots. Obviously this dig is very much before that about 12000 years at
least according to the second article.
I wonder if it could have been from a wheel, a simple cart or "barrow" affair, the first wheel discovered is meant to be from mesopotamia around
3500BC, altho it has been estimated to have been in use in asia around 8000 BC.

Thank you, someone with common sense skills on here.
It looks like a friggen wheel with a hole in it for the axle. What gets me, is how did they get an almost perfect circular hole in stone, and farther
more when did they use to shape the stone so well with?

It looks to me as if the point on the head is the chin of a person looking upward. This could have further implications. It could be to signify an
acknowledgement of the heavens. Maybe the artist just messed up, and corrected the sculpture accordingly. Only the artist has the answers. I think
this is simply an example of an artistic attempt to recreate the surrounding world.
It's amazing to think that art has been around longer than governments, and money. Now with the existence of these things, artists attempt to
recreate this world, whatever the media, and tell people that the state of the world is in turmoil. Most lack the ability to see it.

i suppose it could be used as a wheel .. but why decorate a wheel with ornamental carvings?
no suspension , no rubber would be a quick death for a mammoth tusk wheel, so why bother carving this stuff on? only for it to be worn out real quick?
unless they are stone age 'go faster' stripes of course
