Do you 'collect' videos? Be careful...

The video was of man swinging his baby around. Much like playing "aeroplane" but in a far more 'reckless' manner. As it turns out this is common place in many circus families (it is believed this is a Russian performer).

The uploader downloaded the video to share it on another site. To show people what happens, you know like the news do. Apparently if you show it on the news that is okay but if you show it on the internet (even with NO evidence of malicious intent) you are a criminal.

There was no further evidence on his computer of anything remotely akin to this material. No child abuse and most certainly no porn.

Thank you.

So many people were expressing disdain and disgust without ever reading what the actual content of the video was. Nice going ATS'ers! Way to deny ignorance by not snapping to a judgement and condemning two people without any facts or details or info at all.

Then a year later I had my very clean cut comp man over to fix some problems and 'those' pictures sprang up! I was shocked.

LOL...I remember those pix. She was in pretty good shape for her age. And yes, once your computer "sees" it, it is there and anyone that wanted to could find it (unless the hard drive was worked over really well).

Pretty scary really.

Ha! Yes.

I just ran a deep scan on a portion of my hard drive last night. I'm a bit of a geek (in a good way...) and I'm reformatting my whole hard drive every couple of months, setting up partitions in different configurations for Linux, or Linux duel booting with Windows, or with multiple distros... anyway, the scan picked up files of various media type going back to 2001..!

It's amazing, complex file types can be recovered from 7 years ago that have been over written countless times.

It made me think how easy it could be to frame somebody... just get them to load an internet page, images are stored in internet temporary files, and that's it. They have illicit material on their hard drive and you can't get rid of it (last night I wasn't using software anywhere near as good as what law enforcement would have access to).

To the people who are giving insult to member baseball101 about his avatar, shame on you.

You mean the people pointing out his hypocrisy? Not really.

His picture is an iconic image showing the world that children are starving and dying from starvation.

The subject matter about this topic is completely different, so lay off him/her.

The fact is, his original comment:

that's just plain creepy ... why would you want those videos on your computer in the first place?

Disregards entirely - much less knowing what- the purpose the LL user had for uploading/collecting the clips-, yet it's perfectly fine for him to have a emaciated African boy as his avatar because it's "making a point". What's not to say this guy doesn't have similar intentions? And the fact that he made that statement without getting into specifics proves he's a hypocrite.

Case dismissed. Perhaps you should feel ashamed for not trying to look at it another way.

Maxmars,

Who would think that someone would have such a fuss made over downloading a video that was already in the public domain and used on the news for whatever reason.

I personally didn't see the video when it was running on the news, but from personal experience I have known many kids who loved being swung about by their arms!

As far as motivations for the person who downloaded the video I can imagine that there could be many. I find it amazing and unusually out of line that he would have to go to court to defend himself for having the video. Even if found innocent he will be out the money that is spent on a lawyer.

Thank you for the warning, You just never know what could be used against you do ya? I guess you never can be too careful.

And people go around calling others paranoid, sheez, sometimes it is useful to be cautious when you don't really know where the abuses of power and need for numbers may lie.

Is this her?

OK, back on topic.
I'd be willing to bet that they can find dirt on just about anyone from what they have on their HD.
Has anyone here ever DL'ed something labeled one thing, only to find out it's Kiddy porn?
I have, I promptly deleted it, but I am sure it could be recovered. My only defense would be the accidental DL'ing due to mis-labeling.
If they don't get someone for those questionable things, they could ding someone for copyright infringement.

To summarize:
They can get you on something, somewhere on your hard-drive if they want to bad enough.
